DERBYSHIRE made a dream start with three quick wickets at the beginning of their LV County Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Following the blow of Tim Groenewald's impending departure from the 3aaa County Ground, it was just what Derbyshire needed as, having lost the toss, they had the home side 11-3 after only 13 balls. They struck with the first ball of the day as Angus Robson drove at Mark Footitt and a thick outside edge flew straight to Marcus North at gully. Tony Palladino was driven for four off his first ball but his next beat Greg Smith's defensive push and the batsman went lbw for four at 6-2. Footitt had his second wicket with the first ball of the third over as it nipped back into right-hander Ramnaresh Sarwan and the West Indian was caught at short leg by Paul Borrington for five. It might have been 17-4 in the fifth but Josh Cobb drove firmly at Footitt and David Wainwright, at mid off, could not hold on to a tough one-handed catch as he hit the floor, diving to his left. Tom Taylor, a 19-year-old right-arm seamer, got through a good six-over spell for 20 runs after coming in for his first-class debut as Groenewald's replacement but Cobb (46) and Ned Eckersley (43) recovered to get the scoreboard moving at a steady pace to get Leicestershire to lunch at 107-3.
