WINDS of 65mph caused major problems across Derbyshire. Western Power Distribution called in extra engineering teams from the South of England and South Wales to help with repairs in the county throughout Thursday evening - with many homes in the north of Derbyshire, particularly around Matlock, affected by power cuts. A spokesperson for the company said: "The engineers will be working very, very hard to get as many people re-connected as possible." Police were also been deluged with calls for help - between noon and 5pm, they received 350 weather-related reports from the public on Thursday. One of these was to cars which had been crushed under trees at Mundy Play Centre near Markeaton Park. As of 9pm, one road in the area was still blocked, this is the A515 in Cubley. The road was partially blocked at the Derby Lane junction, because of a fallen tree and fallen power cables. The calls police received earlier on Thursday included: *A man was injured when he was hit by falling masonry in East Street, Derby. Read the full story here. *A "huge chunk" of sandstone also fell from Revolucion de Cuba in The Wardwick. Fire crews cordoned off part of the road as more was expected to fall. Leon Groom, 34, who owns the Wardwick pub opposite, was having a business meeting at his premises when the masonry fell. He said: "I heard a massive bang, turned around and saw the stone falling from about 80ft. It was a miracle nobody was hurt. "We rushed outside and decided to kick some of the rubble away from the road, looking up at the same time to make sure it was safe. "There's traffic every few seconds on the street, so there was a good chance somebody could have been hit. It would have been horrific if someone had been underneath." *Severe winds caused damage to part of the roof at the Royal Derby Hospital. It happened at the back of the building behind the Kings Treatment Centre and, as a result, hospital bosses closed part of the road around the grounds. No-one was injured. A hospital spokeswoman said firefighters checked the safety of the area before the road was re-opened. She said: "In the meantime, we opened up the rear entrance to the hospital site to allow vehicles to leave the site. "We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused to patients and visitors coming to the hospital this afternoon." *About 550 homes and businesses lost power for more than two hours from 10am when an electricity pylon fell in Ripley. Hammersmith was also closed in both directions between the Lowes Hill junction and the Asher Lane junction, because of recovery work of the pole. *A 10ft trampoline flew out of a garden in Hunter Road, Belper, and struck several cars. Residents became involved in trying to retrieve it. *East Midlands Trains said its services experienced "severe delays" due to the strong winds: a tree on the line at Wingfield affected services between Derby and Chesterfield. A spokesman said this was later removed and services were getting back to normal. Tickets from Thursday will be accepted on services for Friday. *Cross Country services to Newcastle and Southampton, which pass through Derby, were cancelled. Services from Derby to Sheffield were still running but were delayed. *A6 Bakewell Road in Buxton was closed and there was queueing traffic in both directions between the A53 Spring Gardens junction and the Batham Gate junction, because of an overturned truck. This has now cleared. *Markeaton Lane in Derby was partially blocked at the A52 Ashbourne Road junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *A444 Burton Road, in Overseal, was partially blocked at the B5004 Woodville Road junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *B5020 Station Road, in Mickleover, was blocked between the Radbourne Lane junction and the Uttoxeter Road junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *A515, in Fenny Bentley, was blocked near the B5056 junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *B5023 Derby Road in Wirksworth was blocked in both directions near the Cinder Lane junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now been cleared. *B5023 in Wirksworth blocked at the Callow Park School junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *The Avenue in Tissington was blocked in both directions between the A515 junction and The Green junction after a tree blew over trapping three people in a car, none of whom were seriously injured. This has now been cleared. *A6 in Bakewell was blocked in both directions between the A619 Rutland Square junction and the Agricultural Way junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now been cleared. *A 50ft tree blew down across Lodge Lane, in Spondon, just as a bus was approaching. This was causing congestion at the A52 junctions. This has now cleared. Kevin Davison, 53, who lives on the corner of Sitwell Close and Lodge Lane, told how the tree came down at lunchtime and toppled onto the wall at the bottom of his garden. He said: "The bus was coming up the road and all of a sudden the tree just toppled down into the path of its. Traffic is at a standstill along the road but the city council had workers on the scene very quickly and they are dealing with it pretty well at the moment. "It took off some of the top bricks off the wall but there doesn't seem to be any other damage." Trent Barton said on its Facebook page: "Unfortunately one Spondon flyer is stuck in Sitwell St and will be unable to move until the tree has been removed, all other Spondon Flyers are diverting up Willowcroft Rd." Derby City Council's Streetpride workers are currently at the scene removing the debris. Sheila Simpson, 75, of Church Street, Spondon, said; "I saw the damage while driving in my car and came back out to walk my dog and have a closer look. "It is so dangerous. People cannot come off the A52 and people cannot get home – I think they are probably old trees." *Residents in homes along nearby Gascoigne Drive in Spondon have been unable to get their cars out of the street, because of the fallen trees. The road closure also meant people were abandoning their cars outside the nearby Spondon Methodist Church, in order to walk to their homes. *At East Midlands Airport, officials said earlier there were delays on both inbound and outbound flights because of the wind, with one flight due to arrive from Paris at 3.40pm – and scheduled to return to the French capital – cancelled. A spokeswoman said: "We have also had two flights diverted to East Midlands Airport from other airports." Storm force 10 gusts have been reported at the airport: *Hoardings from behind Derby bus station Riverlights blew loose on to the road at lunchtime and motorists were forced to drive round them. * A514 Derbyshire - A514 in Stanton by Bridge was partially blocked in both directions between the B587 junction and the A5132 junction, because of a fallen tree. This has now cleared. *Parts of Derby's Westfield Centre were cordoned off as maintenance teams checked the building was secure. *Only two stalls at Ashbourne market were open for business today because of the high-winds. The fruit and veg and fish stall remained open for business as usual and Derbyshire Dales District Council helped them get ready today. *Amateur weather forecaster Martin Harris, of Spondon, said he had measured wind speeds of 48mph in the village but said these were likely to be faster in more exposed areas of the city or county. He said: "I've been asking for updates online about the weather conditions and I've been inundated with tales of bus stopping, tress falling and power lines down. "But I think we are seeing the worst of the weather now."
