THE BOMB squad was called to Derby's Market Place after a charity shop worker handed in a suspected hand grenade to a city centre police office.
The shocked staff member found the grenade in a donated bag at the shop, which has not been named, this morning.
It was taken to the inquiries office, in the Market Place, at 11.30am.
The office - along with workers at the nearby Assembly Rooms - was evacuated.
A picture of the device was sent to the bomb squad but it was not possible to determine if it was live.
Explosive experts attended the scene and found the device had been deactivated and removed it from the scene.
