A DISPLAY of thousands of poppies planted by a 76-year-old volunteer to commemorate the First World War has been cut down by bungling council workers.
An area of Ashbourne Cemetery had been sown with around 50,000 seeds by commemoration organiser Trilby Shaw but the display was left devastated in a few hours on Wednesday as council workers strimmed the area.
The flowers had been sown in late March, meaning they would have been blooming by the end of July as Ashbourne joins the nation in remembering the centenary of the outbreak of the conflict.
Derbyshire Dales District Council has apologised, blaming a communication breakdown and said it will take "urgent action" to put things right.
