THE former director of facilities at Derby's Al-Madinah School has failed in his appeal against dismissal.

Shahban Rehmat was also a founding trustee of the Muslim free school which hit the headlines following a damning report by Ofsted – the Office for Standards in Education.

Mr Rehmat was forced to resign by the Government at the end of January, along with two other founding trustees, and a new trust board was appointed to run the school.

It is the new trust board which dismissed Mr Rehmat from his employment there.

A spokesman for Al-Madinah School said: "We can confirm that, at the appeal meeting, the decision to dismiss Mr Rehmat was upheld."

Mr Rehmat said his appeal was "still under investigation" and that he had been advised he could not comment on any aspect of it.

Al-Madinah School, which is in Nelson Street, was opened in September 2012 but within 12 months had hit the headlines amid claims that female staff were being forced to wear Islamic dress and girls were being forced to sit at the back of classes behind boys, although no evidence was found for this by Ofsted.

A subsequent Ofsted inspection in October led to a report which called the school "dysfunctional", "inadequate" and "in chaos".

The trustees were given time to come up with an action plan but this was not accepted by Schools Minister Lord Nash, who made it clear that they should resign.

Sir Barry Day, chief executive of the academy chain Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust, was asked to draw up an action plan to see if the school could be saved.

He agreed to become chairman of the school's new trust and Lord Nash allowed the school to continue but ordered that the secondary section should close from the end of the summer term this year.

Since February, the school has undergone an Ofsted monitoring visit which revealed that "rapid progress" is now being made and that teaching is much improved.
