Cricket: Denby and Ticknall target a better second half

THEY are not really in the title race but Denby and Ticknall have the potential to provide one of the more entertaining encounters in the Beechwood Mazda Derbyshire Premier League tomorrow.

Both sides take an enterprising approach to the game and the evidence from last weekend suggests both will be in good shape, with confidence boosted.

They currently sit sixth and seventh, with Ticknall 14 points ahead of Denby, but will feel a strong top-half finish is not beyond them.

For Ticknall, the position is particularly disappointing, after they opened the campaign with three straight wins and it looked like a title challenge was in prospect.

However, after that start, they did not win again until they completed the double over champions Swarkestone last week, having beaten them on the opening day, too.

Since that start, of course, they have not seen much of opening batsman Paul Borrington or opening bowler Tom Taylor, who have both been playing for Derbyshire.

"It has been a frustrating year, really, as we have shown how good we can be at times but have let ourselves down at others.

"We're obviously delighted for Paul and Tommy but they have been massive losses."

Ticknall's return to form was signalled the previous week when they made short work of Nottinghamshire side Mansfield Hosiery Mills in the Derbyshire Premier Cup.

The Swarkestone game last week saw them chase down 192 for the loss of four wickets, with Eddie Ikin hitting a brilliant 85 not out in an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership with Johnny Thompstone, the win coming with eight overs to spare.

"Yes, that was a great win at the weekend," said Chilman.

"It's always nice to beat the best teams in the league and all the better for it being a local derby.

"I know Swarkestone also had players out but it was a fantastic effort from the bowlers on the day to keep them to 192.

"Their top seven was as strong as we'll face and our bowling line-up had no Taylor, Ryan Cowley or Zain Abbas.

"It was our best performance to date and, hopefully, we can now build on the wins against Mansfield and Swarkestone in the second half of the season.

"We really should be much closer to the top of the table than we are.

"Denby, I suspect, will say similar to us and expect to push themselves up the table in the second half so it should be a really good game.

"The first match was great for the neutral and I'm sure this will be equally tough for both sides."

In that first game, Ticknall made it over the line in a low-scoring game when Cowley – who should be back in action tomorrow – hit a six off the last ball to take them past Denby's 170-9 with two wickets in hand.

Denby did not win last week but they are four games unbeaten and pushed title-chasing Sandiacre Town all the way in a pulsating game last week, threatening to chase down a target of 268-8 until the last overs of the game.

They have Peter Burgoyne easing his way back into cricket after his release from Derbyshire with stress-related issues and the powerful young all-rounder hit a sparkling 64 in their run chase.

Captain Joe Greenhalgh has also found form with the bat in recent weeks, with two half-centuries followed by 47 against Sandiacre.
