DUFFIELD squash star Nick Matthew started his Commonwealth Games title defence with a comfortable victory in Glasgow.
The world champion took less than half an hour to see off Xavier Koenig of Mauritius.
Matthew, England's flag bearer at Wednesday night's opening ceremony, dropped only seven points, winning
11-3, 11-3, 11-1 in his 100th appearance for England.
"I wasn't expecting such a great reception – it felt like the final, not the first round," he said.
"It was an unbelievable experience for both of us. I've had a long career and played in some amazing venues but I've never had a first-round feeling like that."
Koenig added: "Nick Matthew is my idol so to come here and play him is like a dream.
"I thought I played quite well but he was far too fast for me. He is a great guy and very generous and I hope he has a great tournament."
Matthew's Duffield and England team-mate Laura Massaro romped to victory over 16-year-old Papua New Guinean Lynette Vai in just 15 minutes.
The world champion triumphed 11-2, 11-4, 11-1.
in the table tennis, Chesterfield's Liam Pitchford also opened with a win as England's men and women came through their opening clashes in the team events without dropping a game.
Pitchford celebrated an 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Kane Watson.
Former Repton school pupil Georgie Twigg suffered a first-minute injury blow as England's women's hockey team beat Wales 2-0.
England coach Danny Kerry said: "She took a ball to the groin. It's very painful for her and we will know when she has been assessed."
Goals in each half from Alex Danson and Nicola White clinched the win for England.
Derby wetsuit firm Huub saw three of their clients form the top three of the men's triathlon.
However, hot temperatues in Scotland meant the Huub wetsuits weren't required as Alistair Brownlee added Commonwealth gold to his Olympic, world and European titles.
His younger brother Jonny took silver and South Africa's Richard Murray bronze, to complete a top three of Huub customers.
