Flood defence work behind delayed opening of new Derbyshire railway station

MORE details have been revealed about why the building of the £6.5 million new Ilkeston station has been delayed.

It had previously been reported that the issue was caused by the presence of great-crested newts.

Derbyshire County Council has now said it is also down to "significant additional flood prevention work" being needed.

Work was due to start on the station in June but is now planned to begin in October.

That means it will now open in spring 2015, instead of December, as was originally planned.

A temporary car park will open at the same time as the station, until the permanent car park is completed in the summer.

Councillor Andy Botham, deputy cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: "We're disappointed that these delays mean we won't be able to finish the station by December.

"But I want to reassure local people that, despite the delays, the station will open next spring.

"Building a station is a complex civil engineering project and we've needed to work with many organisations. We've had a number of setbacks which were beyond our control and couldn't be foreseen.

"We know that this will be frustrating for local people, as it is for us, but we are doing all we can to get the station built as quickly as possible."

A council spokeswoman said the newts were a species protected by law and with a declining local population.

She said: "Newts were found during a routine ecological site survey and an application to Natural England for a licence to work on the site has been submitted.

"The licence will set out what works are able to be carried out on the site while any newts found are trapped and relocated."

On the flood work, she said: "Following the severe floods in parts of the country last winter, there are new requirements for flood protection.

"Four large culverts will be built under the car park to take any flood waters.

"Putting the culverts in will take extra time as the ground over the culverts will need time to settle and therefore a temporary car park will be built to allow the station to open as soon as possible."
