FORMER Derby County star Tommy Smith has joined Championship new boys Brentford.

The experienced forward has signed a one-year deal with the Bees following his departure from Cardiff City over the summer.

Smith, 34, was the Rams' player of the year in 2005-06.

He has made 548 career appearances, also playing for Watford, Sunderland and Portsmouth.

"Tommy will bring a level of experience to the squad," said Brentford boss Mark Warburton.

"I am sure he will make a valuable contribution over the season ahead."

REPUBLIC of Ireland international striker Simon Cox has left Nottingham Forest to rejoin Reading.

Cox has signed a two-year contract with the Royals, with who he started his career.

Reading are also chasing another Forest forward, Jamie Mackie, while former Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand also poised to join the club.

"I'm very lucky to have played once for this football club and signing the second time feels just as good," said Cox.

"I still know a lot of the players here so bedding in shouldn't be too hard for me.

"I'm delighted to be here and I can't wait to get started again."

Cox scored 14 goals in 82 games for Forest, who paid West Bromwich Albion £2m two years ago.

Meanwhile, Forest have completed the signing of striker Britt Assombalonga from Peterborough United for a reported club record fee of around £5.5m.

The 21-year-old scored 33 goals in 58 games for Posh last season.

The former Watford striker has signed a five-year contract at the City Ground.

CARDIFF City have completed the signing of Tom Adeyemi from Birmingham City.

The former Norwich City midfielder has joined the Welsh club for an undisclosed fee, on a three-year deal.

The 22-year-old is seen as a replacement for Derby-born Jordan Mutch, who has moved to Queens Park Rangers for £6m.

"I'm delighted he has signed," said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "He will give us physical presence.

"He will add a dimension to our team. That physical presence in midfield - I was looking for it."
