A FIRST-HALF strike from Lucas Akins gave Burton Albion a 1-0 win over League Two rivals Oxford United this afternoon.
Akins put Gary Rowett's side ahead in the 42nd minute after good work by fellow newcomer, Richard Beavon.
Beavon and Akins were two of five new players making their debut for the Brewers, with goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, John Mousinho and George Taft also in the starting 11.
The win was Burton's first opening day success as a Football League club.
Manager Rowett said: "It was nice to see that we've carried on where we left off last season.
"We were good defensively and counter-attacked well but maybe that bit of quality let us down.
"We're a little bit lower in numbers this year but we're better in quality and pleased with what we've got."
