A NEW video has been released, showing the construction of the cycle track at the new £27.5 million Derby Arena, Pride Park. Some 265,000 nails were hand-driven into the 250 metre track, over a six week construction period. The video uses photographs to show this work sped up to take just a few seconds. Watch it here:
Councillor Alison Martin, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "This new video allows the world to see the cycle track take shape, which is the centrepiece of this state-of-the-art facility. "Many cyclists will be eagerly waiting their chance to use the track, and thousands of people in and around Derby will be keen to use the other fantastic sporting facilities it provides." Planks of wood for the track which, laid end-to-end, would stretch from Derby to Leicester, came from the Russian pine forests of Siberia. The track has no finish as such other than the coloured painted racing lines. The Arena is scheduled to open in early 2015 and there is more to the building besides the track. It will host other sports as well as being a 5,000-capacity events venue. The track infield will host sports including badminton, basketball, netball, wheelchair basketball, volleyball, martial arts, table tennis and trampolining. There will also be a 150-station gym, as well as group exercise studios, and a cafe/bar. Recruitment of two key main posts at the Arena - the general manager and the cycle manager – is now underway.
