STARTING the new season a day ahead of the rest of their division, Mickleover Sports began with a home victory in a tight game against Newcastle Town last night.
The visitors, like Sports, have been strongly-tipped to do well in Evo-Stik First Division South this season and there was certainly little between them in this game.
The two teams were clearly rusty in the first half, although Sports had both the bulk of possession and chances.
Karl Demidh had the best of the opportunities early on but shot wide twice.
Mickleover also appeared to be unlucky to be denied a penalty for handball.
Although Newcastle had their moments, the game looked to be heading for a draw until the 84th minute.
And it was a moment to savour for returning striker Karl Ashton.
He met a well-placed corner from Andy Dales on the right with a powerful header to score his 100th goal in Sports colours.
