Lucky to be alive after caravan took me with it

WE'RE often urged to get some exercise and "get on your bike". I got on my bike but got off it very quickly – or should I say I was thrown off it!

I frequently bike to Spondon village and then back along Sitwell Street in the Ilkeston direction. I set off recently, hugging the kerb as usual, when this large caravan passed me, also on the kerb, taking me with it, dragging me along with my right handlebar stuck to the side of it.

I could do nothing but hang on until it left me, throwing me onto the opposite side of the road. I hit the road hard, hurt my elbow and side and my bike fell on top of me.

The good folk of Spondon appeared from nowhere, helping me up, offering every assistance and getting me off the road to safety.

The road into Spondon is always busy with lorries as well as cars hurtling into the village. I was extremely lucky that there was nothing coming or I would have been killed for certain.

I now push my bike on the pavement.
