HARVEY Hosein picked up another record on his debut but Surrey's sixth-wicket pair inflicted some damage to Derbyshire on the second day of their LV County Championship match at The Oval.
After Derbyshire were bowled out in the morning for 210 and restricted to a first innings lead of 29, Surrey were all out for 279 shortly before the close in their second innings, setting Derbyshire 251 to win on day three.
Hosein, the 18-year-old wicketkeeper playing in his maiden first-class match, took his tally of catches in the game to 11 on the way and, with that, broke a Derbyshire record which had stood at 10 – jointly held by Bob Taylor in 1963 and Harry Elliott in 1935.
Wayne Madsen passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season on his way to 63 but Derbyshire added only 46 for their last five wickets.
Derbyshire lost their sixth wicket to the fourth ball of the day as Hosein was caught behind for four to Jade Dernbach.
Wayne White (6) then played on to Tim Linley and David Wainwright (1) was caught at second slip off Dernbach to make it 178-8 but Madsen and Cotton put on 31, with the debutant pulling Linley for two fours in one over.
Madsen made his 63 off 85 balls with 10 fours but was caught down the leg side off Stuart Meaker, who then had Cotton caught at third slip for 15 to clean up the innings in his next over.
Cotton then took the first two Surrey second innings wickets before the home side had wiped out its deficit, having Rory Burns caught at third slip for 16 and Vikram Solanki caught behind for two at 24-2.
Zafar Ansari and Steven Davies came out positively after lunch and put on 62 in 14 overs before Alex Hughes bowled Davies for 22 and then switched ends to have Ansari caught behind for 35 at 108-4.
When Gary Wilson chopped on to Wainwright and went for 16 it was 114-5 but Jason Roy and Arun Harinath responded with a partnership of 122 that gave their side fresh heart.
The stand was finally ended when Hosein caught Harinath for 42 off Wainwright at 236-6 and, in the next over, Roy holed out to deep square leg off Mark Footitt for a very good 81, made off 86 balls with 13 fours.
Hosein had the dismissals record outright when Gareth Batty (12) drove and nicked Footitt at 255-8, then Linley was bowled by Wainwright for two at 262-9.
Finally, Dernbach was bowled by Footitt in the penultimate over of the day.
