THE University of Derby's Frank Faulkner said proposals put forward by Prime Minister David Cameron to stop terror fighters from landing in the country were "unworkable", "We can't stop terrorists from coming back to our city" (September 4).
Those responsible for the safety of our citizens, namely our politicians, could have predicted that most jihadists fighting for ISIS would choose to return to the UK eventually rather than live in a Sharia caliphate without the trappings of western culture and should have taken the appropriate action then.
As Frank Faulkner points out, freedom of movement applies to terrorists like the rest of EU citizens and, as long as they gain entry to the EU at some point, they can proceed to the UK unchallenged. We need to take control of our borders immediately to reduce the threat as much as possible.
The Government's lack of action will mean that, if it ever addresses the situation – concerned as it is about infringing the terrorists human rights and incurring the wrath of Brussels – with legislation, it will be too late and the terrorists will be back among us.
In Frank Faulkner's opinion "this does not necessarily follow that anyone is going to commit any acts of terrorism". Wishful thinking? The prospects do not look good. The truth is we are heading for an extended period of living under terrorist threat as we did during the "troubles" of the last century. Anyone too young to remember should research the results of IRA terrorism on the population of this country.
