MORE than 260 jobs have been created by Tesco as part of a multi-million pound new-look superstore.
The supermarket chain is planning to plough £5.7 million a year into the local economy and create 266 jobs if new plans for the store, off Hawkins Lane, Burton, are given the green light later this year.
A separate, non-food retail unit and a restaurant/takeaway, as well as space for 515 vehicles and a petrol station, could also be created on the site.
It comes three years after initial plans were approved for a larger store which would have created 400 jobs - but a change in focus to convenience foods for Tesco shifted its concentration to smaller sites.
In a letter to Burton MP Andrew Griffiths, Michael Kissman, UK communications director at Tesco, said: "Customer shopping patterns are moving dramatically away from large stores and towards online and convenience and we expect these trends to intensify sharply.
"Our intention is to grow the number of large stores at a significantly slower pace in the future, instead focusing our investment in large stores to refurbishing those we have to make them a compelling destination in an era when no-one needs to leave their house in order to shop."
