A 19-YEAR-OLD woman was threatened with a knife and robbed as she walked along a Derby city centre street.

Police are appealing for information after the incident, which happened in Mercian Way, Derby, near the junction with Forester Street, just after midnight on Thursday.

The victim told detectives she was stopped by a man who showed her a knife, before demanding she hand over her valuables.

The victim gave her mobile phone – a Sony Xperia X2 – to the offender, who then ran off in the direction of Babington Lane.

He was of mixed race, about 5ft 9in, of slim, athletic build, and wore a light grey zipped hoodie and blue jeans. He spoke with a Derby accent.

Police want witnesses or anyone who might recognise the description of the offender to call them on 101, quoting crime reference 39459/14.

The incident has prompted officers to remind people about personal safety when walking alone at night.

Crime prevention and safety advice includes keeping to well-lit areas or roads that are busier with traffic where possible; sticking with a group if possible; keeping valuables hidden in a pocket or bag, and keep bags under your arm so they cannot be easily snatched.

People are also being reminded to be aware of their surroundings and consider alternative routes or transport if they feel unsafe.
