FORMULA one driver Jules Bianchi is to undergo surgery for a "severe" head injury after a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix.
The Marussia driver was taken to hospital after crashing at the same spot where recovery vehicles were dealing with the Sauber of Adrian Sutil, who had also had a smash on the previous lap.
The FIA said Frenchman Bianchi was unconscious as he was taken from the Suzuka track.
Reports suggest Bianchi will be moved to intensive care after his surgery.
Bianchi, a member of Ferrari's young driver programme, is in his second season in F1.
Mercedes Lewis Hamilton won the race to extend his world championship lead.
