A THIEF stole a car following a tussle with its owner, managed to snatch the keys, drove off and collided with a taxi.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the theft of the blue Mazda from Rosehill Street in Normanton yesterday.
At 5pm, as a 34-year-old man was getting into the vehicle, another man grabbed him from behind and demanded the keys.
The assailant tussled with the driver and managed to steal the keys and the car and drive off.
Shortly afterwards the stolen car collided with some parked cars and a taxi in Madeley Street.
It was then driven back on to Rosehill Street, followed by the taxi driver, where it became stuck in traffic.
The original victim realised that the offender had returned and he and the taxi driver managed to detain the suspect for a short time before he escaped and ran off towards Normanton Road.
The suspect is described as being white, about 20 years old, of skinny build and possibly Polish.
There was quite a large crowd of people on Rosehill Street when the man was detained and officers would like to speak to anyone who was there.
People with information should contact the police on 101, quoting incident number 549/6/10/14.
