FORECASTERS at the Met Office have been explaining why a tornado hit Derbyshire today. Experts said it was a combination of factors which resulted in the horrific weather over Alfreton this afternoon, causing damage to houses and trees. Alex Burkill, from the Met Office, said: "Low pressure to the west of the UK has brought a weather front over the country. "And the heavy showery rain is in association with this front and, as it passed over Derbyshire, this activity allowed for the tornado to form. "It has been quite a showery day, with some being pretty heavy in places. "The showers should ease as the night goes on." He said tomorrow would see showers pushing in from the west of the country again. But he added: "They shouldn't be as heavy or frequent as today and we are not expecting tornados to form tomorrow."
