A POLICE officer is in hospital after the car he was in was rammed by a stolen van. The incident happened in Stanhope Street, Long Eaton, at 9am today. A police spokeswoman said the male officer had been taken to hospital. She said that the driver of the stolen van had spotted the police car and driven into its front and side. The spokeswoman said the van driver then made off before the vehicle was dumped in Bennett Street. She said: "There is a police officer that has been taken to hospital. I don't know details of his condition yet." David Welton, of Stanhope Street, said he heard an "almighty bang" when the incident happened. He said: "We opened the curtains of our house and saw a police car there. Then there were four more that arrived. "I offered a police officer a cup of tea. He looked shaken up. "It was that man that was taken to hospital. I think he had been sat inside the car."
