Ian Meakin has been sentenced to six years in prison after he stabbed his partner with a bread knife, plunging the blade 12 centimetres into her stomach.
Meakin, 49, admitted the manslaughter of his 27-year-old partner Angela Ward when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on October 21.
Judge Gregory Dickinson QC said as he sentenced him on October 23: "In my judgment, in this case, there was substantial provocation."
Meakin told police he had had enough when he attacked 27-year-old Miss Ward, at their flat in Critchley Street, Ilkeston, in May.
