MAPPLETON BRIDGE JUMP: Organisers change date after "lack of engine"

The annual Mappleton New Year's Day Bridge Jump has had to move dates due to a lack of interest. The iconic event, which for more than 25 years has taken place on the River Dove on New Year's Day, will now be held on Easter Monday. Last year's event was hampered by torrential rain and hail, with a small hardy crowd turning up to watch more than 30 people, many in fancy dress, compete in the raft race and bridge jump. The event was organised for the second year by the town's Lions club following the death of the original organiser, Jim Breeze, in 2012. Lions spokesman Charles Wimbush said that fewer people were turning up to support the bridge jump, and this was one of the main reasons for changing the date of the event. He said: "The Lions' John Harrison and I met with the sub aqua club, which does the water safety for the jump, to review this year's event and to plan for the future. "Over the last couple of years, entries have definitely fallen, and not so many people have turned up to watch. So, in spite of all the hard work by the volunteers, as well as disruption to the village of Mappleton, very little money is raised for charity. "All this in spite of excellent publicity in our local newspapers, and on TV and radio. So the choice was straightforward – find a better date, one that would ensure a greater turnout, or cancel – so Easter Monday it is." This year's event raised £600 for charity – down £400 on 2013. Mr Wimbush said the decision had not been taken lightly and, while he understood there would be some regret over the change to a long-standing tradition, he believed this would safeguard the event's future. Entries for the 2015 jump, which will be on April 6, can be made at Nigel the Butcher's in Dig Street. Further information will be given to volunteers and existing entries in the near future.
