MORE than £100,000 of damage was caused at a car dealership after a car left the road and crashed into the forecourt in the early hours of Saturday morning. Chris Dixon, managing director of Smiths of Ilkeston, said he has been left picking up the pieces following an act of "mindless stupidity". He said he was called out by Derbyshire police to the garage in Station Road, at 1.45am, and discovered a trail of damage. Mr Dixon said: "Four brand new cars have been written off, two have been extensively damaged, a barrier was destroyed and the front door smashed. A lamppost was also flattened. "We have cleared most of the damage away and are beginning the difficult task of totting up the cost, which is at least £100,000 and counting, and negotiating the insurance situation. "It is fortunate that this happened in the early hours because at least there were no staff or customers about." Mr Dixon said it was business at the Vauxhall dealership as normal today and added: "You can't let something like this disrupt everything. We are just the victims of mindless stupidity." A Derbyshire police spokesman said that two men had been arrested following the incident, on suspicion of drink-driving. He said that the car had left the road, smashed through into the forecourt and ended up upside down. He said one of two men inside the car had received minor injuries and the other had fled the scene.
