DERBY'S Sandy Ryan gave England just the start they wanted on the opening day of the Women's World Boxing Championships in South Korea.

The 21-year-old from the One Nation Pegasus club showed sharp movement and constantly troubled Hungary's European Union champion Bianka Nagy with solid right hands in their light-welterweight contest in Jeju.

Ryan was on top throughout and sealed her victory by forcing the Hungarian to take a standing count in the third round. The judges awarded her a unanimous decision.

That was an outstanding start for Ryan but the toughest of challenges awaits her in the second round of the competition, where she will come up against Turkey's Gülsüm Şeyma Tatar.

The 29-year-old is a three-time European Champion and a two-time world champion, winning the title in China in 2008 and Barbados in 2010.

A total of 67 countries are represented in the eighth edition of the World Championships.
