A SUPERB penalty save by Ross Atkins in the fourth minute of added time on finally secured Gresley's place in today's FA Trophy third qualifying round draw.

It was a testament to the Moatmen's defensive resolve that Atkins had been rarely tested until he flung himself to his left to turn awayAndy Gascoine's spot kick, which had been awarded for Mitch Hanson's trip on Gascoine.

Hanson missed a golden opportunity to put Gresley into a 22nd-minute lead when his penalty was pushed away by Peter Fotko before the Slovakian keeper recovered quickly to keep out Keiron O'Connell's follow-up attempt.

It was Hanson's first penalty miss after successfully converting six this season and was awarded after Cecil Nypni's trip on Jack Langston.

Skipper Jamie Barrett produced a last-ditch tackle to dispossess Jordan Thewlis before a swift counter-attack saw Steadman break quickly before being denied at his near post by Fotko.

Fotko needed to be at his best again to turn Eric Graves' close-range effort for a corner after a neat build-up involving O'Connell, Martin Smyth and Lucas Harrison.

Gresley's overall dominance finally bore fruit after 51 minutes. Graves won possession from Daniel Wilkinson before rolling the ball back to Harrison, who picked out Steadman. He in turn found Smyth who turned sharply before firing past Fotko from close in.

Either side of Gresley's opener both Wilkinson and visiting skipper Mohammed Sabo entered referee Sean Richardson's notebook following trips on O'Connell, who had troubled the visitors' defence.

Atkins did well to push Gascoine's free kick clear before the visitors were denied a 72nd-minute leveller when Harrison, under pressure from Gascoine, did well to keep out Tyler Williams' effort as it was about to cross the line.

Substitute Ryan King and both O'Connell and Graves – Gresley's principal candidates for the man of the match nomination – all played supporting roles to set up Steadman to take his season's account into double figures with a close-range finish.
