WORLD Squash Champion Nick Matthew started the defence of his title in Qatar with a win.
Though he had to overcome a slight scare in the third game against German qualifier Raphael Kandra, the Benz-Bavarian Duffield player eased through 11-2, 11-6, 10-12, 11-1 to set up a second round match against Gregoire Marche of France.
"I was happy enough with how I played and sometimes it can be a bonus dropping a game like that third, it keeps you on your mettle."
