LEEDS United owner Massimo Cellino has been disqualified by the Football League and asked to resign from the Championship club.

The League took its decision after obtaining documents from an Italian court, which had found 58-year-old Cellino guilty of tax evasion.

The League says Cellino has breached its "fit and proper" ownership test.

The Italian is entitled to return to the club from March 18 next year and can appeal against the League's ruling.

He will be able to resume control at Elland Road at the time because his conviction will be deemed spent.

Cellino was fined £502,000 (600,000 euros) in March this year after being found guilty of failing to pay import duty on his yacht.

The League subsequently blocked his deal to take over Leeds but an independent QC overturned the decision on appeal in April, allowing the takeover to go through.

Reacting to the League's ruling, Leeds issued a statement saying they were in the process of taking legal action.

Leeds beat Derby County 2-0 at Elland Road on Saturday.
