AN Indian takeaway that was infamously targeted by a gang with a pickaxe and shovel is again in the headlines – this time for scoring zero out of five in a hygiene inspection.
Punjabi Spice in Harvey Road, Derby, was told to make "urgent improvements" following an inspection on February 20.
Sajjad Hanif, who took over the business last May, said that he was shocked to be given the zero star rating.
He said: "I thought that we were keeping everything clean.
"The inspector said the doors needed painting, the putty around the sink needed changing and the temperature on the front cabinet was wrong.
"We are putting the things right and have until May before the next inspection."
Ratings are decided on how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.
In total, 104 premises across Derby were inspected in February and Punjabi Spice was among three places that scored zero out of five.
The full list can be found below.
Abbey Food Store, on the corner of Abbey Street and Burton Road, was another to get the lowest rating.
The Derby Telegraph tried to contact the shop for a comment but received no response.
Sizzling Kitchen, about 150 yards away in Burton Road, also scored zero.
In this case, Derby City Council ordered the premises to shut immediately because of what it described as a "serious mouse infestation".
The diner was allowed to reopen 10 days later after an £8,500 refit, which it had been planning anyway, addressed the problem.
Mohammed Shamoon, who has owned the premises for just over a year, said previously he had shut down the premises a "a good few hours" before the council issued an emergency prohibition notice.
He told the Derby Telegraph that wire wool had been used to fill holes which mice may have got through and that the property was now "air-tight".
