MORE than two tonnes of garden waste in Derbyshire had to be sent to landfill after someone dumped hypodermic needles in their brown bin.
Erewash Borough Council staff made the shock discovery at a recycling site when they were sifting through waste to check for any contaminations.
When the needles were found it became dangerous for the workers to continue the task and more than two tonnes of waste surrounding the syringes had to be rejected and sent to landfill.
The incident has prompted the council to issue another appeal to residents to use the free brown bin collections for garden waste only.
