DERBYSHIRE County Cricket Club's bid to avoid defeat on the final day of their LV County Championship match against Worcestershire at New Road got off bad start.
With Worcestershire declaring overnight at 432-9, a lead of 213, batting out the whole of the day for a draw was the height of Derbyshire's ambition but they lost three wickets in their first 12 overs.
They lost another on the stroke of lunch to leave them teetering on 59-4, with Wayne Madsen 23 not out.
Derbyshire needed to burst the Worcestershire bubble early on, following the previous evening's battering, but they lost a wicket in only the fourth over when Stephen Moore pushed at a Gareth Andrew ball and was caught at first slip for four at 11-1.
Both openers had gone in the 12th over, when Billy Godleman was lbw to Charlie Morris for nine at 23-2 and Morris struck again in his next over to have Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught at first slip for four to make it 29-3.
Madsen and Chesney Hughes survived the initial storm then but, to the penultimate ball before the break, Hughes edged to slip off Saeed Ajmal for 12 and Derbyshire were in big trouble.
