Killer Anthony Craig, who fled Derbyshire prison, fights extradition from Ireland

A CONVICTED murderer who fled to Ireland after he walked out of Sudbury Prison more than a decade ago wants to appeal against the decision to extradite him back to the UK. In July, Irish High Court judge Mr Justice John Edwards said he had decided to surrender Anthony Craig, who was sentenced to life in 1974 for the brutal murder of an accountant, to the UK authorities. However, the order to surrender Craig was not finalised and the 66-year-old has remained on bail to allow lawyers to consider making an application for leave to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court. Cathleen Noctor, for Ireland's Ministry of Justice and Equality, today told the High Court that written submissions from Craig's lawyers had been received, but her client wished to review the submissions. Craig had lured accountant John Kirby to a park in Blackburn in 1973 after meeting him at a gay pub in the city. He robbed him of 2p before hitting him over the head with a brick three times. Craig had served 28 years in prison when he walked out of Sudbury in 2002 and never returned. He escaped to Ireland and lived in counties Cork and Leitrim. He currently has an address in Rathcoole in south Dublin. He was arrested on February 14, 2013, on an extradition warrant after authorities in the United Kingdom had sought his surrender for escaping from lawful custody. Mr Justice Edwards remanded Craig on continuing bail until October 7, when the case will he heard again.

SHOP workers were tied up in an Ilkeston armed robbery in what police tonight described as "a terrifying ordeal".

Officers are appealing for witnesses after the incident in the early hours of Thursday.

Two men dressed in black clothing and balaclavas went into the One Shop in Charlotte Street and tied up the workers before leaving through a door which leads on to Grass Street.

Detective Inspector Donna Sisson, from Ilkeston CID, who is leading the investigation, said: "The two members of staff were subjected to a terrifying ordeal just as they were preparing to open the shop.

"We urgently need to hear from any witnesses who were in the Charlotte Street or Grass Street areas at the time, who saw suspicious men or vehicles.

"We particularly want to speak to a man who was waiting opposite the shop just after the incident and was picked up by someone in a white flat back van, as we think he may have seen the offenders leaving the scene."

Today, police said this incident was not connected with a murder investigation which is also taking place in the town.

The robbery took place between 5.20am and 5.35am on Thursday, September 11.

Anyone with information on the robbery should call Derbyshire police on 101, quoting crime reference 38337/14

IT IS a massive weekend for Sandiacre Town Cricket Club.

Apart from Sunday's ECB Royal London National Knockout Cup final against Sunbury at Bristol, they have the small matter of a Derbyshire Premier Cup final against Ticknall tomorrow at Alvaston & Boulton CC (11am).

Captain Dan Wheeldon says they will not be holding back in the first match, especially after missing out on the Derbyshire League title to big rivals Ockbrook & Borrowash.

"Everyone at the club is excited for what will be a massive weekend in our history – the place is absolutely buzzing," he said.

"We certainly aren't ignoring Saturday – we would love to get some silverware under our belt for the season before Sunday."

Wheeldon acknowledges that winning the national title will be a big task against Surrey side Sunbury.

"The opposition looks strong, with around 250 First Class games between them," he added.

"It's going to be a tough ask but we have a team spirit that counts for a lot and we know, on our day, we can beat anyone."

A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Ilkeston has been charged with murder after the death of a man on Thursday.

Santino Giovanni Genovese, of Charlotte Street, Ilkeston, will appear at South Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on Saturday charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Paul Averill, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene and another man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two men were found with serious head injuries at a house in Charlotte Street at about 5.40am on Thursday.

Social media was flooded with tributes to 30-year-old Mr Averill with a Facebook page called R.I.P Paul J Averill set up in his memory.

Benjamin Michael Houlding said he had fond memories of his friend.

He said: "Paul, you were my friend and helped during the darkest moment in my life.

"You helped me and never asked for anything in return, and for that I will never forget you my friend.

"This has just come as such a huge shock and my thoughts are with your family now, especially little Millie. Why the lord works in such dark and mysterious ways, I will never know but you will always have a warm place in the hearts of the people you touched along the way. Sleep well pal, I'll never forget you."

Clair Hyden said: "It has not sunk in yet that we are not going to see you again. I am going to miss you tinkering with cars with Wayne and having a laugh with your random sense of humour. Rest in peace Paul, you're going to be missed."

Sarah Newton said: "Rest in peace Paul, it is so very sad and such a loss to your family and your beautiful little girl. My thoughts are with your family and friends and your daughter."

Aaron Richards said: "I'm really shocked by this. You never think such things would happen to people you grew up with. My thoughts go out to your family."

Lisa Griffiths said: "Rest in peace. You are one of the nicest people I had a privilege to know. Such tragic news. Ride high in the sky Paul."

Residents living close to the scene on Charlotte Street said the incidents were shocking but it would not deter them from living in Cotmanhay.

A police spokesman at the scene said police would be carrying out reassurance patrols until Monday.

He said: "We are working around the area providing maximum visibility. We were here this morning when the children went to school and will be here all weekend."

Floral tributes were laid at the scene yesterday.

Clean up Derby: 'City needs more street champions to fight fly-tipping'

A CAMPAIGN group battling for more to be done about fly-tipping in Derby has called on the city council to accelerate its plans to recruit more residents as "street champions" to help tackle the problem.

Councillor Asaf Afzal, who is responsible for waste, said previously that he wanted to see a quick expansion of the authority's Streetpride Champions scheme.

This followed Derby Telegraph articles revealing the scale of the fly-tipping problem in Normanton, which is blighted by waste, from meat to furniture, being repeatedly dumped in the streets.

Streetpride Champions take responsibility for reporting problems such as fly-tipping and helping with queries from residents about what they should do with different types of rubbish.

On July 10, when Mr Afzal made his comment, there were 16 champions in the Normanton and Arboretum wards. By September 2, there were another 10.

Of these, four were from the Eastern European community, which is known to be the source of some of the fly-tipping.

Dawn Gee, from Normanton Empowerment Team, which is battling against fly-tipping, said the programme needed to be accelerated.

She said: "As this is one of the things the council is pushing as a positive move against fly-tipping, they need to get more numbers.

"I'm wondering if they have marketed it enough?"

Mr Afzal said the council considered it a success whenever anyone agreed to be a street champion.

He said: "We would like to sign up as many as possible.

"Our neighbourhood team engages with residents to encourage them to become street champions, whether through forums, cabinet-on-patrol sessions, street briefings or community events."

The council's website says street champions could also report things like dog fouling and full litter bins.

The authority had previously said that, in the 12 months to March, there were 6,651 incidents of fly-tipping in the city – 5,173 in the Normanton and Arboretum wards.

Mr Afzal has now said that the vast majority of these incidents involved "side waste" being placed next to a bin and then not being taken away.

Rubbish must be inside bins for the collectors to pick it up.

Mr Afzal said: "The current method of data collection is therefore being reviewed so that, in future, a more detailed picture of performance, particularly within fly-tipping, can be given."

Latest statistics available show that, in the period between April 1and August 25, there were 2,364 "waste-related complaints" in Derby, of which 2,015 were in the Normanton and Arboretum wards.

A £12,000 DIAMOND which dropped 100,000ft from space after being launched from a Derbyshire field has STILL not been found - a month later. The cushion-cut gem was attached to a helium balloon in August and launched into space from a field in the county. It was part of a PR stunt, called #Diamondsinthesky, by London jeweller 77 Diamonds. The diamond is thought to have landed somewhere in a small village in Lincolnshire but it has not yet been found. It was fitted with a GPS tracker, showing it reached 100,000ft before plummeting back to earth and landing somewhere in a five-mile radius of the village of Lea.

A 24-YEAR-OLD Derby man - who told police the reason he had so many plastic "dealer" bags on him was because he sold them to drug sellers - has now been stripped of more than £1,400. The Derby Telegraph reported earlier this month how police came across Jaseem Ramzan sat on a bench in Normanton Park while they were trying to track down a robbery suspect. Derby Crown Court was told how there was a strong smell of cannabis in the area and a blue bag he had with him contained five bagged cannabis deals. It heard that the discovery led to a search of Ramzan's home, which found more cannabis deals, "a very large quantity of plastic dealer bags" and about £1,500 in cash. Ramzan, 24, of Patmore Square, Sinfin, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing cannabis with intent to supply. The court heard that his previous offences included assault and drink-driving. He received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, ordered him to undertake 150 hours unpaid work and pay £450 prosecution costs. Now, magistrates have held a hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act, where a forfeiture order for £1,478 was obtained against Ramzan. The act means that anyone who profits from crime can lose the financial and lifestyle gains they have enjoyed. If you have information about someone living from the proceeds of criminal activity call Derbyshire police on 101.Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

MUSIC and dance have marked the completion of a £1 million revamp of part of Derby city centre. The work at the junction of St Peter's Churchyard, East Street, and St Peter's Street, was organised by Derby City Council - together with the St Peter's Quarter Business Improvement District. The aim of the revamp was to create a performance space for entertainment, with new seating and lighting. St Peter's Church has been cleaned and new lighting installed to "enhance its architecture". To mark the work done to the area, called St Peter's Cross, local performers were invited to entertain shoppers on Saturday afternoon . Some acts performed in other areas of St Peter's Quarter – including near the Ram, outside the HSBC branch and at the Riverlights development. Stephen Jeffery, chairman of St Peters Quarter Board - who cut a ribbon to mark the opening with councillor Martin Rawson, cabinet member for environment, planning and regeneration - said: "The completion of work is a real cause for celebration in this area. "We have been working closely with Derby City Council to bring St Peter's Cross to the top of the regeneration agenda and are delighted with the results."

Concerns over 100-homes plan for Derbyshire village set to be swept aside

OBJECTIONS to a housing development in a Derbyshire village will be swept aside as councillors are set to give it the green light. Proposals to build 100 homes on agricultural, greenfield land off Willington Road, in Etwall, were put forward earlier this year and South Derbyshire District Council received 162 objections. A subsequent re-application removed plans for a cricket ground from the development but this has still received 41 letters of objection. People are concerned that the new homes will add to already-existing traffic problems in the area, a lack of amenities in Etwall, including health services, and a shortage of primary and secondary school places. John Port School is the largest secondary school in the county and has more than 2,000 pupils, many of whom travel from Hatton and Hilton to attend. There are also concerns that the existing green buffer between a proposed rail depot and the village will be swallowed up by the development. The site is one the district council's preferred development areas put forward in the Local Plan and councillors are recommended to give approval when the planning committee meets on Tuesday from 6pm.
