YouTube sensation Peter Oakley whose tears wooed the stars dies at 86

A DERBYSHIRE grandfather who became an internet sensation after posting YouTube video diaries has died at the age of 86.

Peter Oakley first discovered YouTube accidentally after searching on the internet for more information about videos.

And his first blog in 2006, called First Try, received more than two million hits.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph in 2007, Mr Oakley said: "It was pretty amateurish, my first try. I don't rehearse or edit anything, I just sit there and talk."

The pensioner, of Bakewell, took to the internet under the pseudonym Geriatric1927.

He posted more than 400 videos and had more than 43,000 subscribers worldwide to his channel.

After his first video, he received more than 4,000 e-mails – with celebrity fans, including Star Trek's William Shatner, later e-mailing the pensioner to find out more.

Mr Oakley also produced his autobiographical series, Telling It All, which gained worldwide recognition.

The topics he spoke about in his video diaries revealed that he served as a radar mechanic during the Second World War, was a fan of motorcycles and he was a widower.

By mid-2006, he was the most subscribed user on YouTube.

Unable to answer every message, he posted another video, which showed him tearfully thanking people for their messages of support.

In an interview in the Derby Telegraph, he said: "That video of me crying is always the one shown on telly if they do a piece about me now. People say I am a celebrity now."

But, despite Mr Oakley's internet success, one of his greatest moments was singing with the pensioners group, The Zimmers.

Their cover The Who's My Generation – to highlight the isolation of older people – reached number 26 in the UK singles chart in 2007.

The group also performed across the globe, including a show in Munich which attracted 12 million TV viewers.

The news of Mr Oakley's death was posted on his website, www.askgeriatric.com.

It stated that he had cancer "too advanced for treatment" and had been taken to a nursing home.

His final video, posted on February 12, ended with the words: "In conclusion, I would say my possibly final goodbye. So goodbye."

He died on March 23.

Alfreton Town: Striker Paul Clayton hit with three-match ban

ALFRETON Town's Skrill Conference Premier promotion bid has been dealt another blow with the news that striker Paul Clayton will be suspended for the next three matches.

Clayton was retrospectively punished for an off-the-ball offence during Monday night's live televised clash with FC Halifax Town.

The 29-year-old was alleged to have kicked out at an opponent in the 2-0 defeat and, after video evidence was reviewed, he was handed a three-game ban.

That means Clayton, who has scored six goals in 31 appearances this term, will miss tomorrow's important home showdown with fellow play-off hopefuls Nuneaton Town, plus the fixtures against Welling United and Aldershot Town.

While Alfreton have maintained their unlikely promotion push, they were recently hit with a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player – and also lost defender Michael Wylde to a broken leg.

The points punishment was in relation to the signing of goalkeeper Jon Worsnop from FC United on an emergency loan.

Ironically, Reds boss Nicky Law moved to bring in cover – and competition – for Worsnop, now at the club on a permanent basis, ahead of yesterday's transfer deadline.

Eighteen-year-old stopper Joe Wildsmith has been signed from Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season.

Law has no new injury worries, though defenders Darran Kempson (groin) and Chris Westwood (thigh) remain doubtful.

Third-placed Alfreton are three points ahead of fifth-placed Nuneaton.

Six teams are within three points of Nuneaton in the race for the play-offs.

Law was disappointed with his team's performance against one of those sides, Halifax.

"They came out and played at a really high tempo and, unfortunately, we couldn't match it," he said.

"We were nowhere near it. We were way off it in too many areas.

"We tried to play in an offensive way, we put three up front, but if I am honest, there was very little impact all game and then you are on the back foot, unfortunately.

"And I was disappointed with the two goals we gave away.

"I am massively disappointed but I have no complaints. We were well beaten.

"We are still in the play-offs but we could have really taken advantage and stretched the lead from sixth spot to where we are to seven points but we haven't and we have got to go and get a reaction on Saturday.

"That's what it's about. We go and learn from it and we move on."

Alfreton striker Daniel Wishart has had his scheduled loan extension at Margate cancelled and has joined Eastleigh on loan until the end of the season instead.

Weekend business boost as we treat our mums in the sun

BUSINESSES are preparing for a bumper weekend as temperatures are set to be unseasonably high.

The forecast for Mother's Day on Sunday is for a top temperature of 18C, triple the average for the time of year.

The Crewe and Harpur pub at Swarkestone said it was fully booked for Sunday lunch and expected its garden to be full.

Assistant manager Steph O'Neill said: "I'm sure there will be plenty of people through the doors and wanting to eat outside as Mother's Day is very popular.

"We have our normal menu on Sunday but, for those booking a table after 6pm, then they get a free glass of sparkling wine."

Rosemary Brown, owner of Bluebells Dairy in Spondon, was confident it would be the busiest Mother's Day the business has seen.

She said: "We have a special strawberry, meringue and vanilla sundae especially for the day.

"We also have cream teas and we expect it to be a nice day for mums to relax and chill out."

It is set to be 16C tomorrow and 15C on Monday.

Mark Smith, the manager at Swarkestone Nursery, has said previously that he has never been so excited about an approaching summer in 15 years.

He made that prediction on March 3 – at the same time last year, the business was coping with 9ft-high snowdrifts.

He said: "It's a really exciting time with the weather at the minute and I'm sure the restaurant will be packed."

Spondon weather forecaster Martin Harris said there would be highs of 18C on Sunday.

He said: "This weekend looks to be one of the warmest so far this year, with warm air coming up from the continent.

"The weekend looks like a weekend of sunny spells between the breaks in the cloud, with plenty of sunshine.

"Mothering Sunday looks to be the best of the weekend, with temperatures as high as 18C."

Daniel Gill death at Leabrooks: Stimulant found in tablets

POLICE investigating the death of a 19-year-old man in Leabrooks have found tablets found during the investigation did not contain ecstasy (MDMA). Tests have confirmed the tablets contained a mixture of PMA (para-methoxyamphetamine) and caffeine which has killed six people in Derbyshire. PMA is a powerful stimulant drug with effects similar to those of ecstasy. It has been linked to several deaths throughout the UK. Daniel Gill died at his home on Chapel Street on January 18 after taking what he believed to be ecstasy. Steve Holme, of the Derbyshire Drug Market Project, said: "There have been six deaths in the last three years in Derbyshire where PMA was a factor, either on its own or in combination with other drugs. "In at least two of the deaths the person had taken what they thought was amphetamine, and in the other cases they had taken tablets they believed were ecstasy. "I am sure from looking at each case that these people did not know that they were taking PMA. "There have also been other cases where people have been very ill but swift medical intervention has saved their lives. "If somebody is ill after taking drugs, it is vital that people ring for an ambulance quickly and are open with ambulance staff about what has been taken. "The police will not attend such incidents unless a death occurs or unless the ambulance staff are threatened or subjected to violence. "Drug suppliers are unscrupulous people who are only interested in making money. "It is a fact of the drug markets that what you think you are buying isn't always what you get." Anyone with concerns about drugs can visit a new website www.doyouknowwhatsinit.org.uk. If you have information about drugs in your community contact Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Chainsaw gang on the loose in Derby to massacre trees

REGARDING the article, ''Trees chopped in safety work" (March 20) about trees on Bass's Recreation Ground, will Derby City Council ever get it right on tree management?

We are at the start of the nesting season and out comes the chainsaw gang. Where have they been hiding or were they hibernating?

The lame excuse that the branches were covering lights is a bit much considering the time you need lights is in the dark winter nights (that is, from September until March, not when the days are longer and evenings are lighter).

The council's reputation for wildlife and forestry management is dire.

This disgusting pile of rubbish - dumped in Castle Donington - is the worst case of fly-tipping ever seen by North West Leicestershire District Council. The culprits left the mighty mess on West Meadow Rise, on the former power station site near Trent Lane. Staff from the authority are now sifting through the rubbish looking for clues as to who left it. The council estimates the clean-up will cost taxpayers £1,000. Each year the district council clears away an average of 700 fly tips. If you have information about the incident call 01530 454545.

Murder trial hears eye-witness account of moment Kadeem Blackwood was shot dead

A MURDER trial has today heard more eye-witness evidence of the moment 15-year-old Kadeem Blackwood was shot dead. The evidence was given at the retrial of Michael-Paul Hamblett-Sewell, who is accused of murdering 15-year-old Kadeem six years ago. Callum Campbell, who was 19 at the time, has already pleaded guilty to being the gunman in Caxton Park, Sunny Hill, on that night. Hamblett-Sewell, also known as MP, is accused of being a party to, being behind or ordering the shooting of Kadeem. Hamblett-Sewell, now 25, of Marlborough Road, Allenton, denies murder. Curtis Ogakcole, a fellow gang member of Kadeem's, told the jury that his teenage friend ran to a gate at Caxton Park before collapsing on the floor moments after the blast. Mr Ogakcole, who was known by the street name of Screamer, was part of the Younger Browning Circle Terrorists, to whom Kadeem was affiliated. He was shot dead by Callum Campbell, then 19, in November 2008, who was known as Blackz and was affiliated with the rival A1 Crew. Campbell, formerly of Osmaston Park Road, admitted murder and is currently serving a 21-year sentence. Michael Paul Hamblett-Sewell, formerly of Marlborough Road, Allenton, and whom the prosecution claim was a member of the A1 Crew at the time, is on retrial for murder. The prosecution says he ordered the shooting but the now 26-year-old denies the charge. Mr Ogakcole told Nottingham Crown Court that he and a gang of "six or seven" people went to Caxton Park on the night of November 11 for a pre-arranged fight between Kadeem and one of the A1 Crew. Peter Joyce QC, prosecuting, said: "Marlon Donaldson, one of your gang, approached one of the A1 Crew in the park and a gun was produced." Mr Ogakcole said: "I just hear him (Mr Donaldson) say 'why has he got that?'" Mr Joyce asked: "When he did not put the gun down how did Kadeem react?" Mr Ogakcole replied: "Kadeem said 'why has he got that? Tell him to put it down'." Mr Joyce asked: "Was anything said to the gunman by anyone from the same gang before it was used?" Mr Ogakcole said: "Yes." Mr Joyce said: "Could you hear what was said?" Mr Ogakcole replied: "No." Asked by My Joyce about the shooting, Mr Ogakcole said: "He was pointing the gun at Kadeem. There was a shot, Kadeem ran to the gate then he dropped to the floor." Another witness, Damir Semiz, told the hearing how he walked past Caxton Park with his then pregnant girlfriend at the time the shot was fired. He told the jury he knew one member of the YBCT but he did not know Kadeem. Mr Semiz told the court he heard the two rival gangs arguing with each other on Caxton Park. Mr Joyce asked him: "What really caught your attention?" Mr Semiz replied: "A loud noise, it was like a loud bang, like an explosion. "The two groups ran off in opposite directions. "I saw one lad, he stood by the entrance to the park, he dropped to his knees and then to the floor. "I went to help him, I dialled 999, I tried to talk to him, I stayed until the ambulance arrived. "I was aware of what had happened." The trial continues.

Mum of Only Way Is Essex star Maria Fowler bares mastectomy scars for cancer awareness

TRUDY Fowler, the Derbyshire mother of former star of the Only Way is Essex Maria Fowler, took to Twitter to bare all in the name of cancer awareness. Trudy's photograph was posted to Facebook and Twitter and showed her left breast after reconstructive surgery following an "aggressive" form of breast cancer. The 59-year-old, from Willington, decided to show her scars after people were posting no make-up 'selfies' to social media networks to raise awareness for Cancer Research. The campaign raised around £8 million in six days. Trudy said her decision to show her scars to the world came on the spur of the moment. She said: "I think the no make up selfies started because someone had skin cancer but didn't realise because they were wearing make up all the time. "It was a good campaign because it made people realise they had to look at their bodies a bit more. "I realised I just wanted to show my scars, to give people a bit of hope and I thought, if it helps just one person look at their body and check themselves it'll be worth it." Trudy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, despite examining herself regularly in the shower it was not until she was lying down that she noticed the lump. She said: "In 1995 I had cancer in my womb and cervix then 10 years later had breast cancer. "I hadn't felt well for a while, really lethargic and tired. "One night I was lying in bed and had my left arm over my head on the pillow. "It shifted my breast into a different position and I felt a lump about the size of a peach stone." The cancer was very aggressive and Trudy had to undergo a mastectomy. She said: "I'm so proud of my scars and how they reconstructed my breast at the City Hospital. "I see it as as positive thing, it shows what I've come through."

Dave Lee Travis: DJ faces new indecent assault charge

Veteran DJ Dave Lee Travis is to be charged with a further count of indecent assault, a court has heard. Former BBC presenter Travis, 68, was cleared of 12 counts of indecent assault last month but jurors at London's Southwark Crown Court were unable to reach verdicts on two further charges and were discharged. Prosecutor Miranda Moore QC told the court today that Travis is due to be charged on a further count of indecent assault and he is expected to face a trial on that count along with the two outstanding charges. Buxton-born Travis was previously accused of indecently assaulting 10 women and sexually assaulting another in alleged incidents dating back to 1976 when he was at the height of his fame. The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for more than 20 hours before finding him not guilty of 12 indecent assault charges. But they were not able to agree on a charge of alleged indecent assault against a woman in the early 1990s along with an alleged sexual assault in 2008.

Homes plan for former Derby city centre pub

A DERBY pub which has stood empty for months could be turned into homes for 12 people if plans are approved. The Florence Nightingale pub in London Road in the city centre has been empty for about five months. Developer Dan Holden has now submitted plans to Derby City Council to turn it into a house of multiple occupancy with 12 en-suite rooms, his second project of its kind in the city. In his design and access statement, Mr Holder's agent, Paul Johnson, said that the pub had seen many tenants over the past few years. He said: "The continual downturn in public house usage has led to successive tenants failing to make the premises financially viable despite several facelifts and relaunches. "The premises closed completely, since when there has been absolutely no interest from potential new tenants." Tracie Mayes, who works at Derby City Furniture in London Road, said it was a good thing that the building was set to be filled again. She said: "It's been empty for months so it'll be good to see something done with it. "After the smoking ban, a lot of pubs which didn't serve food were affected and I suppose the economic climate means more people drink at home rather than out. "Hopefully it'll be good for business too. Since London Road Bridge was closed it's been really quiet." The Florence Nightingale pub was well-known for its karaoke evenings and drew in customers from the old Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. It was hit hard when many of the DRI's services moved over to the Royal Derby Hospital in 2009, when it was owned by Punch Taverns. It also drew bad publicity in 2010 when it was the scene of a large-scale fight between Rams and Forest fans which resulted in 12 men being jailed for a total of 16 years and six months The freehold for the pub had been on the market since October for £225,000 and is close to the London Road Community Hospital on the corner of London Road and Litchurch Street. Mr Holder previously converted a house in Gerard Street, in Derby, into a house of multiple occupancy and said in the statement that this led to discussions with the city council. Mr Johnson said: " Having carried out the successful conversion of 18 Gerard Street North, Dan Holder discussed the principle of converting these premises with the council, with a view to carrying out the conversion before the building fell into disrepair through being left empty for a length of time." A date for a decision on Mr Holder's plans is yet to be set.
