DERBYSHIRE CCC will return to Abu Dhabi in 2015 for a pre-season tour.

The squad will fly to the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, March 7 and will spend nine days based at the state of the art Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium before returning on Monday, March 16.

Derbyshire will compete in both red and white ball action against first-class opposition in Abu Dhabi.

Elite performance director Graeme Welch said: "We're really grateful to Briggs of Burton for making this possible. Getting outside and practising on grass, in top facilities, is the best possible way to prepare for the new season.

"During our great run at the end of last season, a lot of it was things coming together that we worked on in Abu Dhabi. It was a good trip last year and we are happy to be returning again.

"From the point of view of the spectators, it's also a great city, so come along and support us."

OBESITY CRISIS: Overweight people to be paid if they lose weight

Radical new plans to pay overweight people if they manage to lose weight have been proposed. The obesity crisis will see employers get funding to offer incentives for staff who slim down. NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens said that the incentives could come in the form of prizes, vouchers or even cash. The NHS, which revealed the plan as part of a shake-up of the healthcare system, already pays for seriously obese patients to go to slimming classes. But this would be the first time it gets companies to help tackle obesity. More than two thirds of UK adults are clinically overweight or obese and the NHS spends £5billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses.

SIMON Dawkins is expected to return to the Derby County squad to face Wigan Athletic this weekend.
Dawkins, who has missed the past five games due to a hip injury, played an hour for the under-21s at Wolves on Wednesday, scoring twice.
And he could be involved against Wigan at the iPro Stadium on Saturday, most likely on the bench.
With Jamie Ward (thigh) out, Johnny Russell and Jordon Ibe look set to continue in the wide roles.
Dawkins could get his chance to start in the Capital One Cup fourth round tie at Fulham on Tuesday.
"We're thinking more about Fulham for him (Dawkins) to start," said head coach Steve McClaren.
"We got Jordon Ibe off during the week (at Blackpool) to give him a little breather and Johnny Russell played 90 minutes and I think he has got the energy - but Dawkins gives us another option."

FREAK ACCIDENT: Derbyshire tortoise Mr T gets garden strimmer plug stuck under his shell

A pet tortoise had to be rescued by emergency vets when he got a garden strimmer plug stuck under his shell in a bizarre accident.

Mr T was strolling around his owner's garden in Alfreton when the accident happened. The six-year-old pet became entangled in the cable when he walked over it.

Jill Johnstone has owned him since he was small. The accident happened when her son, Scott, was putting the strimmer away.

Jill, 60, said: "It was panic stations. My son Scott was putting the strimmer away when Mr T walked over the wire and got it wrapped around his neck and the three pin plug stuck under his shell and between it and his front leg.

"Scott stayed very calm but I was really panicking as we tried to pull him loose and we couldn't get him free. His head was stuck outside his shell when his natural response was to try and go back into the shell which really didn't help things."

Mr T only suffered minor damage to his shell but was sent to Vets Now emergency vet in Alfreton.

On arrival at Vets Now, principal vet Lisa Fotheringham and her experienced team were faced with a real first – a much larger than average tortoise with the remains of a garden strimmer attached.

Lisa said: "It was easy to spot the electrical plug and remnant of cable in between his front leg and his shell.

"We had never had anything like this in the clinic before - most tortoises are smaller than Mr T and we think it was his large size that enabled the accident to happen."

NOTORIOUS police killer Harry Roberts, who it is being widely reported is about to be released on parole, was moved from Sudbury jail after he made a woman's life a misery.

Roberts, who has served 48 years, of his life sentence, was in Sudbury in 2001 when he was granted leave to work at an animal sanctuary in north Derbyshire.

According to medial reports in 2009, the woman running the sanctuary and her son made a complaint about Roberts' behaviour when he worked there while on day release.

Their comments led to Roberts being denied parole and being moved to a closed prison, where he then allegedly began a five-year campaign of intimidation from behind bars against the 65-year-old woman.

She said Roberts, jailed in 1966 for gunning down and killing three officers in London, was still able to telephone her up to five times a week for nearly four years.

The Ministry of Justice revealed in 2009 that it had taken steps to ensure the family received more protection.

The spokesman said: "We have been working with the family and made considerable efforts to improve their situation. Procedures remain under constant review. Protecting the public is paramount."

Roberts has denied all the allegations made by James and Joan Cartwright, who ran the Derbyshire sanctuary.

Derbyshire police did not comment on the claims.

IS this a photograph of a ghost – taken at one of Derby's most haunted hotspots? We reveal the top ten haunted places in Derbyshire ahead of Halloween. GHOST PICTURE: This photograph was taken in Derby and appears to show the ghostly figure of a 17th century woman - at one of the county's most haunted hotspots. The image was captured by Rob Spacey, of Derby, during a night out at The Old Bell Hotel in Derby which is listed as one of the most haunted hotels in the UK. He explained: "A friend of mine works in the Sadlergate pub which is renowned for being haunted. "There is a story that a particular corner of the pub is haunted by a ghost of a '17th century wench'. "Just before locking up time when everyone had left we took a photograph of the corner not knowing at the time the image which had been captured." It is believed the photograph shows 'Mabel the Linen Maid' - one of the many ghosts believed to haunt the building. Mabel is understood to have taken her own life in Room 6 after finding out she was pregnant to her lover who had died in some war. Guests that have booked that room for the night have found their clothes neatly folded at the bottom of their bed, thinking that someone had been in their room when they were asleep, they complained to the landlord only to be told that the staff would not have done this. Here we reveal the top ten most haunted hotspots in Derbyshire. As well as 'Mabel the Linen Maid' the former coaching inn is believed to house many ghosts and a poltergeist in the dining room has been known to throw things around. A serving girl has been seen on many occasions dressed in 18th century clothes and is believed to have been murdered in 1745. The Friar Gate building which housed condemned prisoners is said to have many ghosts – with apparitions appearing in the old cells and passageways of the building. Witnesses have reported hearing eerie banging and scraping noises. In the 18th century a doctor is said to have had a body secretly delivered by body-snatchers which he began to dissect - only for the women to wake up from a coma and run around the cellar screaming before dying. Her screams can still be heard. A blue lady who had an affair with Dick Turpin and a child on the stairs are also said to appear. A grey lady is said to wander the castle and an apparition of a man has been seen – who looks like a gamekeeper or gardener. The ghost of a maid has also been spotted in the kitchen area who killed herself after finding she was pregnant out of wedlock. A young girl called Wilhelmina Fitzherbert who died in 1862 when her nightdress caught fire is said to haunt the hall as well as a man dressed in black who appears in the cellar. Strange phantom noises have been heard and a bed has been known to shake of its own accord at night In the 18th century Robert Revell, the Squire, was said to have been murdered in his own bed by two servants and guests have reported hearing furniture moving when the room is empty. Three apparitions of children in 18th century costumes are also seen at dusk in the garden. Former staff members have reported seeing a figure around the morgue area. It is believed to be a Roman soldier who was killed nearby as the site was built on an ancient roman road. There are several reported sightings of a female ghostly presence in the kitchen area and a child appears in a fireplace before disappearing. The tunnels beneath are said to be haunted by ghosts including that of Alice Wheeldon. She was put on trial in 1918 for plotting to kill the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George but it came to light she had been set up. She had been marched along the tunnels to her court case and now supposedly walks through them in the afterlife. A man who appears to be a gardener is said to wander around the outside of the Friar Gate building and inside the house a child - thought to be one of the Pickford family - is seen dancing around. Strange noises are also heard from the kitchen area.

CHARITY CLOSURE: Family shocked by loss of Home-Start Amber Valley 'which saved our sanity'

A HUSBAND who says his marriage was saved because of the help given by a family charity is devastated to hear his local branch is closing.

Justin Hall spoke out following the announcement made by Home-Start Amber Valley – a voluntary organisation that supports families, where there is at least one child under five, who are experiencing difficulties.

The Amber Valley family support service will close by the end of the year after Derbyshire County Council stopped its funding.

Mr Hall and wife Grace, of Heanor, have been receiving help from the charity over the past nine months.

Grace, who was diagnosed with autism as an adult, has struggled to function in everyday life but a volunteer from Home-Start has helped her learn routines to help her cope.

The 54-year-old, of Heanor, said: "Home-Start are just incredible – without them I am not sure my marriage would have survived.

"My sanity and my wife's have been saved. My wife has made significant progress and together we have learnt coping mechanisms.

"As a consequence, our three-year-old daughter is in a much happier family. We have learned to fight the problems."

Home-Start Amber Valley was set up in 1980 and last year supported 49 parents and 97 children. Their 22 volunteers are supported by three members of staff and by a board of volunteer trustees.

Home-Starts in Derby, Erewash, South Derbyshire and High Peak will continue operating.

Corinne Clemson, chair of the trustees of Amber Valley Home-Start, said: "It is with great sadness that we have reached this decision and we are very aware of the impact on families in the area as this unique and highly valued service closes. The trustees have worked tirelessly to find funding but, after the failure of successive bids, have reached the decision that there is no alternative but to close.

"Our immediate aim is to make sure there is support for the families still on our books."

She said that Home-Start Erewash would in the short term be supporting families and volunteers currently in the scheme in the Heanor and Langley Mill area and that they were looking for alternative support for other families.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: "We're having to review every service we deliver in light of a £157 million shortfall in our budget over the next four years, mainly caused by reductions in Government grants.

"Some very difficult decisions have had to be made to help us work to achieve those cuts and the Home-Start contract was one we chose not to renew when it came to an end in March."

DOG ATTACK: Staffordshire bull terrier attacks girl, 9, in Burton park

A STAFFORDSHIRE bull terrier attacked a nine-year-old girl as she played in a park, a court heard.

Chloe Woodward suffered injuries to her leg, knee and foot after Hugo lurched at her as she was playing on the zip wire in Burton on August 25.

The youngster has now been left wary of all dogs – including the family pet.

But according to the dog's owner, Inese Karole, he is usually 'very playful', and this attack was completely out of character, Burton Magistrates' Court was told.

Zoe Speake, prosecuting, said: "The injured party was asked what it did when it came up to her, and she said it came and jumped up on her and started biting her. The dog wasn't on a lead, but it was with the owner.

"The owner said she was sorry and wanted to get the injured party some money. She put the dog back on the lead, smacked it on its back and left the location."

Chloe's family and the police appealed for help to find the dog's owner in the Mail, which Karole, 37, who is Latvian, saw and handed herself in at the police station.

"She said she didn't know what to do or if she had to report this in this country, but said she didn't know what would be expected in Latvia, either," Ms Speake said.

Karole, of Beech Street, Burton, admitted being in charge of a dog which was dangerously out of control when she appeared before magistrates on Tuesday.

Neil O'Driscoll, defending, said: "The bull terrier is 18-months-old, and never caused any problems whatsoever. He is a playful dog, and plays with her 13-year-old son in this park.

"The zip wire is where he plays with her son, but, regretfully, on this occasion, my client saw the dog bite the child.

"My client says it was an evening and there were few people around, and that's why she had the dog off the lead."

Karole will be sentenced on November 5. The dog may be put down as a result of this incident.

Scotland will reduce its drink-driving limit in time for Christmas. The move is in a bid to save lives after new statistics showed that around 10% of road deaths involve drivers who are over the drink-drive limit. The reduction from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood means that drivers could be breaking the law if they have drunk a small glass of wine or single pint of beer. The new limit brings the country into line with Northern Ireland and most of Europe, while the limit in England and Wales remains at 80mg. What do you think of this?
