Owners act like their dogs? That's not to be sniffed at!

THERE has been a lot of talk just lately about dogs fouling and attacking people but a dog with the right owner is a pleasure. My dogs have always been friendly and gentle, so I would blame the owner. I was reading the other week about how dogs are like their owners but I don't think so. When I meet someone I know I shake hands or give them a hug and a kiss, never once have I been tempted to smell at their bottom. J Smalldon, Ednaston, Ashbourne

POLICE are appealing for information following criminal damage to a primary school in Matlock. Sometime between 5pm on Friday, March 21 and 8.45am on Monday, March 24 offenders forced open the locks of two main entrance gates to the school. The damage caused to the double entrance gates and the pedestrian entrance gate at Castle View Primary School on School Road, has stopped them from working properly. Clare Peat, head teacher at Castle View Primary School said: "As a school we are committed to providing the best provision for our children and we have been very upset by recent vandalism to our children's playing field and the school site. "The governors and I have been looking forward to installing permanent play equipment, which the children have been wanting for so long. "However the recent vandalism is stopping us and meaning that valuable school budget is being spent on repairs rather than the needs of the children." Officers from Matlock Safer Neighbourhood Team are urging residents in the area to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or anti-social behaviour to police straight away. The local policing team will be stepping up patrols and are urging anyone with any information about the incident to contact them. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The forecaster said the warning will start at 4pm today and last until 4am tomorrow. A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Temperatures will be high enough to allow scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms to develop. "Meanwhile, an active frontal system will follow northwards, bringing a band of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms on Monday evening, clearing from the south into the early hours of Tuesday." "Some parts of the warning area could receive 15-20 mm of rain within 4 hours." Meanwhile, temperatures will reach 15C in the afternoon.

Derbyshire has seen less than a quarter of the average rainfall it would expect to see in March, according to forecasters. The Met Office says the county has had 23.2mm of rain compared to the average of 72mm. Derbyshire has also had a 137.7 hours of sunshine, compared to the average of 100. It was also the 12th warmest March since records began in 1910. Last March was the second coldest, in the same period, with an average daily temperature of just 1.7C. That has risen this year to 7.2C, above the average of 5.6C.

Six-month reprieve for Chellaston homeless animal shelter

A MOTHER-OF-FOUR who runs an under-threat animal shelter said it felt like "the walls have stopped closing in" after being given a six-month extension to stay. Jo Fairbrother runs the Second Chance Rescue Kennels in Chellaston which could be forced to close after a controversial planning application for 190 homes was accepted. Jo had feared the centre would have to shut much sooner, after a business tenancy and grazing licence were due to expire today, but said a letter from landowners Clowes Developments confirmed the farm had a six-month extension. But she said six months was not enough time to move, and believes the site will become a haven for gypsies and fly-tipping once she has left. She said: "It does feel like we have some breathing space and time to relocate, which is our top priority right now. "There is now time to sort things out and prepare for a move in the future. "It's really busy here at the minute because we are right in the middle of the lambing season. "Looking at the work we have done here, I'm really worried about the future of the site when we leave." Jo said she and her husband, Paul, who live at the centre at Back Lane, have invested over £100,000 into transforming the business. Jo said: "I think the site will be a massive target for the gypsy community to come down straight away as soon as we have left. "It would be an ideal place and they would love it. "We have had to say to them don't park up here but they keep their eyes out and when the gates are removed it will be a haven. "It would also be a place for fly-tipping and it would be hell to see it like that." The site is home to 90 dogs, 30 cats, 53 ponies and 47 goats which would all need to be moved and Jo said the task of finding somewhere is very difficult. She said: "Now we have the extension it gives us that time but I have told them the ponies will not be moved until October. "The ideal place would be somewhere with outbuildings and it would not need to have kennels. "We could convert the buildings into kennels. "We have worked very hard in creating Second Chance here and we have been very good tenants," she added. Landowner Clowes Developments had previously said Second Chance was made aware last November that it had been given planning permission to build on the land. A spokesman for the company said it did not want to comment.

Gang member tells court he witnessed "a flash and a bang" when Kadeem Blackwood was shot dead in Derby park

A gang member told today how he witnessed "a flash and a bang" when a 15-year-old boy was shot dead in a Derby park. Ben Whittaker said he was unaware a gun had been taken to the incident and had just gone along to see "a one-on-one fight." But a murder trial heard that the night ended with the killing of Kadeem Blackwood, who was part of a gang based around Browning Circle. He was shot in the chest at Caxton Park, Sunnyhill, in November 2008 and was certified dead at the Royal Infirmary, Derby that night. Mr Whittaker told a jury that he was a member of the A1 Gang at the time. He left the city a year after the killing. On the night of the killing, between seven and 10 gang members met in Allenton and went to Sinfin, arriving outside the Megabowl and the Kentucky Fried Chicken premises. The group included Michael Paul Hamblett-Sewell, 26, formerly of Marlborough Road, Allenton who has denied murder and is facing a retrial. Another gang member Callum Campbell, then 19, admitted pulling the trigger and is serving 21 years in jail. Mr Whittaker was asked by Peter Joyce QC, prosecuting: "Who carried the gun?" He replied: "I didn't know there was a gun at that time. I can't say I seen anyone carrying anything." Mr Joyce asked: "We know Callum shot Kadeem. When did he get the gun?" Mr Whittaker told him: "I don't know. I didn't know there was a gun. I didn't know anyone was carrying a gun. "I saw a flash and a bang. I was turned round and saw the flash and heard the bang. "I got off, I ran off," he told the hearing at Nottingham Crown Court. He said the group went to a woman's house and sat quietly, still unaware of what had happened. "We had no music playing, it was just normal, no-one was erratic, no-one was asking anything too tough, we were just kicking, just chilling," he said. But later, a phone rang and one of the group answered it and then replied by saying: "Dead?" Mr Whittaker told the court: "They thought it was a joke because no-one knew. "They went silent. I put it down to mad things. Deem [Kadeem] got mixed up with the whole madness." Under cross examination by Paul Mann QC, defending, Mr Whittaker said this referred to a phone call made by Kadeem the night before he was killed. He was trying to pick an argument with Hamblett-Sewell but Mr Whittaker said: "Michael Paul was not interested. "Michael Paul was 18 or 19 and had nothing to prove to a 14 or 15 year old boy. Callum decided to take it upon himself to have it out with Kadeem."

TESCO in Mickleover has opened a drive-through to help busy customers who want their grocery shopping picked and packed for them. The new 'click and collect' service means shoppers can pick up their groceries at the store without even having to leave their cars. Customers order their items online then drive up to the collection point. Staff come to the customer's car window so there is no need to get out and the shopping is then packed into the boot. Simon Belsham, managing director of tesco.com said: "We believe this will be especially popular with busy mums who have the school run and children's activities to manage. "It offers a convenient solution to parents who want to avoid the challenge of shopping in a busy store with children in tow but can't afford the time to stay in for the shopping to arrive at their door."

Dutch a humiliation for England in World t20 defeat

ENGLAND'S miserable winter hit another low with their 45-run defeat by the Netherlands in the t20 World Cup. Following their Ashes humiliation at the hand of Australia and the public dirty washing exhibition that precluded the exits of Kevin Pietersen and Andy Flower, Stuart Broad's side were demolished by the Dutch in Bangladesh when they were bowled out for 88. England, already out of the competition following their defeat by South Africa on Saturday, had held Netherlands to 133-5 after winning the toss but their miserable reply was the lowest all out total by a full member nation against an associate nation in the history of international t20. The defeat follows similar humblings by the Dutch in 2009 and by Ireland in the 2011 50-over World Cup. Their performance in the tournament casts huge doubt over Ashley Giles' chances of taking over from Flower as England's coach in all formats.

STUART Pearce may yet become manager of Nottingham Forest. Sky Sports have reported that he was ready to reopen talks over the vacant manager's job. Pearce turned the job down last week, citing personal reasons, but it is understood that the Championship club are now in talks over a longer contract offer. Malky Mackay, Steve Clarke, Roberto Di Matteo, Neil Warnock and Gianfranco Zola have also been linked with Forest since Billy Davies' departure last week. BLACKPOOL striker Nathan Tyson is to remain at Notts County for the rest of the season. The 31-year-old former Derby County player joined the Magpies on a initial one-month loan deal in March and he has since made five appearances in League One. It is the second loan spell of his Blackpool career. Earlier this year he spent a month at Fleetwood Town where he made four appearances in Sky Bet League 2. ASTON Villa have agreed to allow Alan Hutton to stay at Bolton Wanderers for the remainder of the season. The Scotland international joined the Troters on February 28 and he so far made five League appearances for the Trotters. There is a chance to move could be made permanent in the summer considering he has not made a Premier League appearance for Aston Villa since 2011-12. CHELSEA are set to make a summer bid for Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow, according to reports. The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for Forest this season and his eye-catching displays have caught the eyes of an array of Premier League sides, including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

England World Cup shirts: Derby MP says FA have "lost touch with reality"

DERBY MP Chris Williamson says he has written to the Football Association's CEO after it was revealed the new England strip will cost £90. The Labour MP for Derby North said the decision to charge cash-strapped fans nearly £100 for the strip was "outrageous". Mr Williamson said: "This is an utterly outrageous rip-off. "Football used to be a working class sport, but it's been commandeered by greedy corporate interests. "The FA has clearly lost touch with reality. The country is in the grip of a cost of living crisis and they should rethink this decision. "I have written to the FA's CEO, Alex Horne, to demand that he gets a grip of this and comes forward with a more realistic and affordable price to enable England supporters to support their team." Mr Williamson recently made a trip to Qatar, which will hold the 2022 World Cup, to warn of the dangers faced by workers on the construction sites building the stadia.

JCB plans war on potholes with new machine

DIGGER maker JCB has unveiled a machine that will wage war against the millions of potholes on the UK's roads. The Rocester firm has launched the Potholemaster, which it claims can fix holes in the road quickly and effectively. Powered by engines built at the firm's Foston factory, the machine is a twist on JCB's backhoe loader, with an attachment at the rear called a "patch planer", which can grind away the surface of the pothole and surrounding road with its steel teeth. Once the job is complete, the digger drives over the area, sweeping up the resulting dust, dirt and debris with a large "sweeper collector" at the front of the machine. The pothole is then ready to be filled with tarmac. The launch of the Potholemaster comes after the Chancellor the Exchequer George Osborne announced in last month's Budget that the Government was making an extra £200 million available to councils to tackle the problem of potholes in the roads. The machine has already started work in Derby. JCB's backhoe loader growth managing director Yvette Henshall-Bell said: "We've had a team of engineers working closely with the highways industry for the past six months to ensure we develop products the sector wants and needs. "Potholes are a huge issue for UK motorists and, in lots of cases, the repairs are nothing more than sticking plaster solutions. "With the JCB Potholemaster, we are offering a cost-effective, permanent solution for fixing potholes." More than two million potholes a year are filled across England and Wales and millions of pounds in compensation is paid every year to motorists whose vehicles are damaged. At least 40,000 drivers nationally claimed compensation from councils for pothole damage to their vehicles in 2013 – up from 25,977 cases in 2012. A legal firm which has seen a large rise in the number of pothole-related claims is Nelsons Solicitors, in Lodge Lane, Derby. Julie Walker, personal injury partner and solicitor at Nelsons, said: "In the first three months of 2013, more drivers reported damage to their cars as a result of potholes than in the same period in any of the three previous years. The pothole situation in the UK is perhaps as bad as it has ever been."

FIREFIGHTERS are warning people not to leave e-cigarettes on charge for long periods of time following recent incidents where the devices have exploded. Technical fire safety and fire investigation lead for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, Paul Shaw, said: "E-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular and, with more people using the devices, we are seeing a rise in the number of incidents related to them. "The people involved in all of these cases were very lucky that the fires did not take hold – the situation could have been a lot worse. "I would urge people never to leave their e-cigarette on charge while they are away from the house or asleep and to always follow the manufacturers' guidance when charging the device."

City homeless project hailed as "great success" after 200 use service

THE final 26 people will stay at this winter's city night shelter as it opens its doors for the final time tonight. Since the shelter, which is held in a different church in the city each night on a weekly rota, was set up at the beginning of December, 200 different people have used it. The organisers from Derby City Mission, who set up the four-month project designed to get rough sleepers off the streets overnight during the cold winter months, have hailed its first year has a "great success". Each church, including Derby Cathedral, has been able to take a maximum of 35 people each night, and has been manned by up to 200 volunteers on a rota. Night shelter organiser Chandra Morbey said: "We had a slowish start as people got to know about the project but it has been increasingly busy, especially during February. "Fortunately, for those who sleep rough, it has been a milder winter but if it had been colder then I think we would have been overwhelmed." Official figures from Derby City Council show that 47 people are sleeping out on Derby's streets but Mrs Morbey said the reality is that the figure is difficult to compile because not every homeless person sleeps rough. She said: "There is a great variation in the people using the shelter. One person stayed for 100 nights, while others were only here for a night or two. But there was usually one new person each night." A review of how the project, which cost in the region of £50,000 with most of the funding donated, will now take place to see how effective it has been. Mrs Morbey said: "We have to see if the venues, volunteers and funding would be in place again in the future but I would like to see it happen again." The project was also an opportunity for linking up the rough sleepers with various organisations that could potentially help them with advice on accommodation or benefits. This has resulted in practical help for some people such as food parcels and new homes for others. Mrs Morbey said: "One guest, who has been living in Derby and homeless on and off for several years left us two weeks ago for a place at an alcohol rehabilitation centre. "He wrote us a letter saying 'Thank you very much everyone. I know now that everyone believes in me and I won't let them down. The night shelter is needed in every city, not just Derby'." Another guest, who has been in the UK for a year but left his accommodation when he lost his job, has moved into a rented home. He said: "Thanks to everyone. You have helped me to start a new life." The churches which took part in the project also included: Pear Tree Baptist Church; Central United Reformed Church; Hope Centre, part of Derby City Church; New Life Christian Centre; Ozzy Road Baptist Church and St John the Evangelist. Dean of Derby Dr John Davies said: "The Cathedral was delighted to be part of this project. "Weekly, we made the Cathedral available as a night shelter, providing access to loos, a kitchen and providing heating too. "Beds were set up at the west end of the Cathedral with the help of our volunteers. "As the city council can do less in these times of austerity, we were glad to be part of the organisation which could step in to help."

FURY erupted today over the unveiling of the new World Cup kit, which is set to cost fans £90 for a shirt. Sports manufacturer Nike has revealed the new kit today. The new home shirt is a white v-neck with a blue Nike logo as well as the traditional Three Lions crest and costs £90. While the away kit, priced at £60, is a round-neck shirt in red. It features a graphic interpretation of St. George's cross on the front, which is an optical illusion and can only be seen from a distance. Martin Lotti, Nike football global creative director, said: "Two references really stood out during the design process for the home kit – that stunning all-white kit England wore in Mexico in 1970 and the idea of the armour of English Knights. England striker Wayne Rooney, said: "I'm always proud to put on the England kit and with these ones it'll be no different. I can't wait to get out to Brazil and play in them this summer." Both the home and away kits will be worn this summer in Brazil. The new home kit will debut on-pitch in a friendly match with Peru at Wembley on May 30.

Rail investment will create and safeguard hundreds of Derby jobs

THE massive investment by Network Rail into our rail infrastructure will create and safeguard hundreds of local jobs over the next five years. That is because Derby is home to the largest cluster of rail companies in the world, many of whom have the skills and expertise to deliver the improvements. Some of these companies work on rail projects all over the world – but now they have a chance to show their skills right on their doorstep. There are already signs that Network Rail's investment is bringing jobs to Derbyshire. Rail consultancy firms, like Pride Park-based Interfleet Technology, have taken on extra staff to work on the electrification project. Companies like pilings contractor Van Elle, based in the north of the county, have won the contracts related to the scheme – in its case, to provide foundations for the overhead power lines. And Network Rail itself is bolstering its numbers in Derby as the electrification scheme ramps up. Many of the companies involved, or who will be bidding for work as Network Rail tackles each improvement project, are members of the Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum. Forum spokesman Rupert Brennan-Brown said: "The next five years will see massive investment in our local railways, delivering an electrified and upgraded link to Sheffield and London that will create enormous opportunities for the local supply chain. "Our annual conference, to be held in Derby on April 10, will not only see Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and other industry leaders lay out their vision for rail from 2014 to 1019 but will also include companies like Carillion, who are keen to partner with local supply companies to jointly deliver tomorrow's railway."
