DARE WARNING: Parents and students at Littleover Community School warned after girl ends up in A&E following aerosol "dare"

CHILDREN and parents are being warned about dangerous dares that have landed one teenage girl in accident and emergency with a severe burn.

The deputy head teacher of Littleover Community School, Jon Wilding, has issued the warning after an increase in the number of children being injured taking part in "dares" that left one girl needing to attend hospital.

Mr Wilding said: "In the past weeks we have seen an increase in the number of students who have been injured by taking part in dares.

"One of our pupils was left with quite a severe burn after she held an aerosol over her skin and meant she had to attend the accident and emergency department.

"The increase is not huge, we are talking about six or so over the last couple of weeks, but we wrote to parents as we wanted them to be aware and speak to their children, as well making themselves more aware of what their children may be doing."

The young girl who ended up in hospital is doing well and receiving treatment for her injury and other children who have been involved in similar dares have been spoken to.

BRIGHTON captain Gordon Greer could miss this weekend's trip to face leaders Derby County.

The Scotland international missed his first League game of the season against Fulham on Saturday with a knee injury and he may miss out again.

Manager Sami Hyypia said: "We need to go with how he feels and see what happens. He hasn't trained for a few days now, so it might be difficult for him to play at the weekend.

"It is a pity that we don't have everyone fit to play, but we need to try and cope with the situation and that will give someone else the opportunity to shine on the pitch."

Brighton were beaten 2-1 in Greer's absence and dropped into the division's relegation zone.

EXPLOSIVES: Former lab technician jailed for setting off homemade explosives in his Derbyshire flat for fun

A FORMER lab technician who made and set off explosives in his flat for a hobby has been jailed for three years. Glenn Robinson, 56, was arrested after neighbours complained of objects being thrown out of his window making loud bangs and similar noises coming from his flat. The firearms and Army explosives units were called in, a 100m cordon was put up around the property and 200 people were evacuated from their homes. At Derby Crown Court Robinson, of Belvoir Crescent, Newhall, admitted making the highly explosive compound hexamethylene triperoxide diamine for an unlawful purpose between July 1 and 27. When police asked him why he had made the explosives, Robinson said he "liked making" them. He admitted throwing some outside, believing no-one was there at the time, but said the majority were set off in his flat. He said he had been experimenting for the three to four weeks leading up to his arrest making devices in his kitchen. Gareth Weetman, prosecuting, said: "He made improvised explosive devices containing HMTD, which is unpredictable in nature and can detonate easily." He said that it was likely to cause serious injury or possibly fatality to anyone in close proximity of the explosion. He said Robinson lived on a first floor flat, with a number of flats above and nearby, and with a communal patch of grass close to the block. Mr Weetman said: "During the days and weeks leading up to his arrest, local residents had been hearing loud banging noises and made numerous complaints to the council." He said that two days prior to the arrest, one resident had been outside watering his plants, when he saw one Robinson's windows opening and "an arm emerging with a chucking motion" and he heard a loud bang. The neighbour was shocked but not injured. Another neighbour told police: "The last few months he has been throwing things out of the window, they explode with a loud bang, which frighten me and my cats." She said the objects were cylindrical in shape and she believed the explosions had been getting "bigger and louder" – the loudest being on July 24. A third resident, who lived in a flat adjacent to Robinson, said: "Someone has been making loud banging noises most days and nights and in the last few days it's been getting worse." The man said that on July 24 he heard a loud bang and a neighbour of his had handed him items that he had found, which "looked like a homemade firework". The resident called the police. After the arrest was made with the assistance of the Army explosives and police firearms units, members of the Royal Engineers inspected the flat. In the freezer section of the fridge-freezer, they found three bottles containing a total of 14g of HMTD and two thin tubes containing the substance, which had been created to act as fuses. Inside the flat, they also found the three core ingredients to make HMTD. Investigations into his internet history on his computer showed that he had been watching YouTube videos on how to make the substance. Sentencing Robinson, Recorder David Mason QC said: "You clearly have a fascination in the manufacture of explosives. "It was clearly a hobby of yours, a hobby that was dangerous in its pursuit. "I accept there was no ulterior motive here but you threw them out of the window causing minor explosions. "This was volatile material which you knew because you kept them in the fridge or freezer. "But if they had got into the wrong hand then heaven knows what might have happened by way of an explosion?" Mark Harries, defending, told the hearing his client had become separated from his family and had been smoking cannabis for 27 years. He said a psychiatric report showed how Robinson was suffering from "chronic depression" and that "smoking cannabis is not the best way to deal with that". Mr Harries said many of the elements used in making the explosives were also component parts in producing a hydroponic set up to grow the class B drug. Mr Harries said: "This is an unusual case with an unusual defendant and in an unusual context. "Mr Robinson made full and frank admissions in his interviews with the police. "He has a particular scientific curiosity which he turned to when his life was at a low ebb. "He was shocked about the reaction to all this, the bomb disposal team turning up at his home, the media coverage, the fact that he was 'red-dotted' by the police and had a Tasar pointed at his chest." Superintendent Gary Parkin said: "This is a very unusual case. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Newhall, who were inconvenienced by the evacuation, for their patience and understanding. Their safety was paramount which is why we took the decision to ask them to leave their homes. "This incident shows how well the emergency services, the local authorities and the army can work together to protect the public we serve." Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

LIBRARIES SCAM: Callers ask for bank details to pay Derbyshire book fines

PEOPLE are being warned not to give their bank details over the phone to bogus callers claiming to be from the Derbyshire library service.

No-one has fallen for the scam yet in the county but council officials are worried that some might.

A number of calls have been reported to the county council in recent weeks.

Each one involved the caller claiming to be ringing to recover fines from long overdue library books. The targeted person was then asked for their bank details in order for the money to be recouped.

The bogus callers have threatened to visit the borrower's house and collect the books in person if payment is not made immediately.

They have also claimed to represent an agency working on behalf of the council's library service.

Cabinet member for health and communities Councillor Dave Allen urged people not to fall for the scam.

He said: "We never have and never will use an agency to recover overdue library fees. If someone has an overdue fee, our library staff will write to them and we would not ask for bank details.

"This is a shameful scam designed to frighten people into handing over their financial information.

"If people receive a call like this they should report it straight away and in no circumstances should they give out any personal information or bank details.

"Anyone concerned about possible overdue library fees should contact their local library to help sort it out."

The council's trading standards team has issued advice.

It urges people to be suspicious of any unsolicited phone calls, not to give out any personal details and, if necessary, to ask for more information in writing.

Anyone receiving a similar call should contact the Citizen Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 to report it.

Residents who want to avoid unsolicited telephone calls can register online with the Telephone Preference Service at 0845 070 0707.

Meanwhile, the council is extending a scheme to provide call blocker devices to older and vulnerable people after a trial found 83% of the calls they received over six months were nuisance calls.

During that time, seven residents from the target group received a total of 1,566 calls – and 1,300 were unsolicited or cold calls blocked by the device.

Eligible residents will be referred to the scheme by the council or Derbyshire police.

DERBY COUNTY: Young striker Kwame Thomas backed to grow stronger after debut at Leeds United

YOUNG striker Kwame Thomas will be stronger for his experience against Leeds United, according to Derby County coach Paul Simpson.

Thomas made his first-team debut as a 66th-minute substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Elland Road on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Rams Academy product could have marked his first appearance with a goal but he missed a good chance 10 minutes from the end of normal time as Derby chased the game.

His general performance pleased Simpson.

"I thought he did a lot of good things," said Simpson. "I thought he worked hard, he got hold of the ball and linked up quite well.

"Obviously, everybody is going to look at the chance and say he should have done better and we admit he should have done better. He should have worked the goalkeeper."

Simpson believes the experience will help Thomas in the long run.

"I always feel for young players or a player making his debut because your first goal is always your hardest, especially as a forward player," said Simpson.

"Unfortunately, the ball went the wrong side of the bar for him and for everybody else but he will learn from that.

"It will be a really valuable experience for him, one he will take forward."

The Thomas chance brought back memories of the opportunity Mason Bennett had on his debut at Middlesbrough in October 2011.

Bennett wrote his name in Derby County's history when he became the club's youngest-ever player, shattering the record set by Lee Holmes on Boxing Day 2002.

Bennett was only 15 years and 99 days old and might have scored two or three goals on another day.

His best chance came after Jason Steele saved low down from Chris Maguire and the ball broke to Bennett, who hit the bar from six yards out.

Thomas will not dwell on the missed opportunity and the England Under-20 international is hoping for more first-team chances.

"At the time, I was very disappointed (to have missed the chance) because it was my debut and it would have been a dream to add to the occasion," he said.

"When I thought about it afterwards, it is part and parcel of being a striker. You miss some and you score some.

"It was replayed a few times in my mind that night, but as a striker you just have to move on to the next chance and try and put that one away."

Looking back on his debut, Thomas added: "It was a really good experience. It has been something that I have been hoping for since I joined the Club in the under 12s.

"To make my debut was a great memory for me and my family."

Thomas has been a regular starter in the Rams' under-21 team this season and Senior Professional Development Coach, Lee Glover, was delighted to see him make the step up.

"We have worked with him for four or five years and seen him come through the ranks. To see him get in the first team was great and he needs to push on from here," said Glover.

"He needs to keep his feet on the ground. He is level-headed lad and is a great lad to have around the place."

DERBY COUNTY: Jamie Ward hands Rams a boost ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion game

JAMIE Ward has handed Derby County a boost ahead of Saturday's Championship clash against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ward stepped up his recovery from a thigh injury by playing 65 minutes of a Barclays Under-21 Premier League Division Two fixture at the Rams' training ground yesterday.

The Northern Ireland international helped to set up Alban Bunjaku's equaliser as Lee Glover's side came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion.

Ward is now in contention for a place in the squad to face Brighton having been out six weeks.

He spoke of his frustration at being sidelined and he also knows he faces a battle to win a place back in Steve McClaren's side.

"I am delighted to get some game-time under my belt," said Ward.

"It was about gaining some fitness and trying to get myself in the best shape for the weekend.

"It has been frustrating because while it is great to see the lads winning, you want to be a part of it as well.

"I have got to find my feet again and get back in the team. That is going to be the toughest part."

Ward had made 11 starts before being injured in the victory at Reading on October 18.

"I always seem to get injured at a bad time, that has probably been the downfall of my career. Injuries just seem to come at the wrong time," he said.

"It is just one of those things, it is a part of football. Our bodies are on the line every day, even in training."

Paul Coutts and Lee Naylor also started for the under-21s as they stretched their unbeaten run to five matches (three wins and two draws).

They started brightly and a clever touch by Ward took him past his marker before he fired a shot low across goal and narrowly wide of the far post.

Tom Koblenz, neat and tidy in midfield, drove a shot straight at Luke Daniels but Albion created two good chances in the first half.

Kemar Roofe could not keep his effort down as he stretched to reach a centre from Bradley Garmston and then Adil Nabi was clean through on goal. He tried to be too clever with his finish and only lifted the ball tamely into the hands of Kelle Roos.

Bunjaku saw his header saved by Daniels early in the second half before Albion took the lead after 55 minutes. Substitute Andre Wright squared for Alex Jones to turn the ball in from close range.

Derby drew level nine minutes later.

Ward worked space on the right flank and drilled in a low centre. Kwame Thomas, who made his first-team debut at the weekend, could not force the ball home and it broke to Bunjaku, who smashed his finish high into the net.

Both sides looked for a winner and Derby had Roos to thank for a fine save late on from Roofe, who had played a neat one-two with Jones.

The Rams under-21s are competing in the newly-introduced division after achieving Category One status for the Academy in the summer. They have 15 points from their 10 league games.

Former Derby defender Darren Moore was in the Albion dugout in his coaching capacity, while Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink watched the game.

DERBY COUNTY: Roos; Hendrie, Rawson, Hanson, L Naylor; Ward (Sharpe, 65), Coutts, Koblenz, Calero (McDonald, 72); Bunjaku, Thomas. Other subs: Mitchell (gk), Guy, Lowe.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION: Daniels; Smart, Garmston, Birch (Wright, 46), Cleet, Howkins, Roofe, S Nabi, Jones, A Nabi, Leko (Wedderburn, 71). Other subs: Pace, Palmer, Roberts.

A FACTORY that produces the coffee pods made famous by George Clooney is looking to take on ambitious individuals to join its team.

Nestlé's Tutbury factory has undergone an investment programme costing more than £300 million in the last four years.

The expanded production facility requires students who want a taste of the food and drink industry.

The company is offering a four-year apprenticeship in coffee manufacturing. Candidates must be at least 18 years old as some shift work is involved.

The academic requirement is to have or expect to achieve three A-levels at grade C or above, preferably including either mathematics, English or science.

The company is looking for people with an ability to solve problems in a practical way and a desire to learn additional skills.

Nestlé is also seeking individuals for its two-year trainee manufacturing programme.

Applicants will need to show they have excellent communication skills.

They will need to have or expect to get five GCSEs at grade C and above, including maths and English.

A Nestlé spokesman said: "At our Tutbury factory more than 1.8 billion capsules were produced in 2013, 87% of which were exported to more than 50 markets including Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and the US.

"It currently employs 850 people, with 24 apprentices and nine graduates currently working at the site. It will employ a total of 1,000 people once all the recruitment is done.

"It is of key strategic importance to Nestlé globally, being one of only three centres around the world set up for volume production of capsules for its Nescafé Dolce Gusto brand, one of the major global product success stories of recent years."

Nescafé Dolce Gusto is a market leader in 20 countries, thanks in part to a charm offensive led by screen legend George Clooney.

With a growth rate of in excess of 50%, Nescafé Dolce Gusto is one of the fastest growing businesses for Nestlé in Europe.

The Tutbury factory is one of the most advanced in the world, having been on the receiving end of a vast investment programme. In November 2011, Prime Minister David Cameron visited to mark the announcement of a £110 investment into the Nescafé Dolce Gusto production unit, a move creating 300 new jobs.

The following year, Nestlé announced a further £200 million investment in a state-of-the-art freeze drying plant at Tutbury, bringing together freeze-dried and spray-dried products and warehousing on one site.

THE A50 in Swarkestone has reopened following two earlier incidents which caused motorists severe delays.

The road was closed in both directions between junction 2, for the A6 in Derby, and junction 3, for the A514 for Swadlincote, while police dealt with a problem involving a beer delivery truck.

Officers said kegs of beer had become dislodged inside the vehicle as it travelled along the A50, meaning the vehicle had to stop causing significant traffic congestion.

Police were also called to another incident in the area involving a Nissan 4x4 which had collided with a lamppost on the A6, just off the A50 between Chellaston and Alvaston, at 5.20pm.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said the road was fully reopened at 6.40pm. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

KEDLESTON HOTEL: Work begins at last on renovating Georgian building, a Brian Clough favourite

RENOVATION work has finally begun on the grade two listed Kedleston Hotel that has been boarded up and empty since autumn 2010.

After four years of negotiations, the Derby Brewing Company has started a £1 million refurbishment project that will breathe new life into the Georgian building.

The company had originally wanted to open in spring this year but the start was delayed while problems were ironed out with English Heritage, Amber Valley Borough Council planners and the Curzon family.

The renovated venue, to be known as Kedleston Country House Hotel, will have a bar where the reception area used to be, a sweeping staircase, an orangery and a Georgian-style garden area where marquees can be erected to cater for weddings.

Instead of 14 small hotel rooms, there will be five boutique bedrooms to the rear that will make the most of views over the Derbyshire countryside.

The building will also feature open fires, restored wood panelling and a separate restaurant area.

It is expected to open in spring next year.

Paul Harris, of the Derby Brewing Company, said: "We are delighted to be starting on the Kedleston Country House Hotel.

"We have been working on this project for over four years, working our way over many hurdles.

"Although the delays have been frustrating, we believe we have used the time positively to improve our plans. We have always believed and been very excited about our vision for this project and what the building can be once again."

The building was constructed in 1761 after being designed by celebrated Georgian architect Robert Adam. It became listed in February 1967 and opened as a hotel in 1970, becoming a favourite haunt of Brian Clough in his Rams heyday.

It was also where Derby County players met following Clough's resignation.

Lady Helene Scarsdale said: "The Curzon family and I are delighted that the Derby Brewing Company is reopening Kedleston Hotel on the Kedleston Estate early next year.

"We look forward to it becoming a charming place to meet friends and to enjoy good food, and to the Kedleston Hotel becoming alive again.

"Good wishes to the Harris family."

The Derby Brewing Company has already taken on and refurbished the Royal Standard, now known as the Brewery Tap, and the Greyhound, in Friar Gate, and operates the Queen's Head, in Little Eaton.

Head brewer Trevor Harris said: "The Kedleston Hotel is a beautiful building I remember it back in its heyday.

"It's been a real shame to have seen its deterioration over the years and we are frustrated it has taken so long to start work.

"But we're really looking forward to bringing it back to an exciting venue for the local residents and people of Derby to enjoy once again."

DEATH SCARE: Ashbourne dad calls for vaccine after his son almost died from meningitis

A CONCERNED father is calling on the Government to make the vaccine for a disease that nearly killed his son available on the NHS as soon as possible. The life of 11-month-old Samuel Kirkham hung in the balance after he contracted deadly meningitis B and medical staff fought to save him. His father Paul Kirkham cannot thank medical staff enough for saving his son but is unhappy that a vaccine has been developed for the disease and is still not widely available. He said: "I was shocked to discover that the vaccine that could have prevented my son from contracting the disease has been available privately since last year. I did not realise this and would happily have paid the £100 or so necessary to protect him. "But it does concern me that it is not given to babies as routine on the NHS, the same as the vaccine for meningitis C." According to the Meningitis Research Foundation, drug companies and the Department for Health have been in talks for several months over a price to make the drug viable to be given free on the NHS. In March, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation recommended the vaccine should be widely available if it could be made cost-effective. Mr Kirkham, 35, of Uppertown Farm, Hognaston, said: "In the meantime, children like Samuel are falling ill and possibly dying. "If a vaccine can be given that will save children then it should be or at least more information given so that people can obtain it privately if they want to. "I wouldn't want anyone to go through what we did with Samuel, although thankfully he seems to have recovered very well from it. "I have spoken out about Samuel to ensure that parents know what is happening about the vaccine but also to make them aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease. "If this can help save at least one child then it will have been worth it." Mr Kirkham said that Samuel was suffering from a throat infection for a couple of weeks before he took a turn for the worst. He said: "Despite taking him to the doctors five times, he was not given any antibiotics because it was considered better to allow his immune system to fight it. "But when he awoke early and started screaming and twitching we knew something was wrong. "His mum, Amy, had always been concerned about meningitis and we were particularly vigilant about looking for a rash developing. "He did not have one but we still decided to take him to the walk-in centre at St Oswald's Hospital even though it was Sunday." Samuel was examined and a small rash started to appear but although the doctor was not sure it was meningitis, she decided not to take any chances and called for an ambulance to take him to the Royal Derby Hospital. Mr Kirkham said: "Thank goodness she did. The ambulance arrived quickly and antibiotics were administered straightaway by the paramedics. I think this was crucial as time is of the essence." Tests were carried out throughout the afternoon and by teatime an emergency ambulance, with a crash team in case he stopped breathing, took Samuel to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. Mr Kirkham said: "We saw the doctor and were told Samuel was very poorly and that he was being placed in coma to help control the disease with strong antibiotics. "After that it was touch and go for about 22 hours and at one stage he stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated – he looked as if he had gone. "Eventually, they decided he was still poorly but stable and he was transferred back to the Royal Derby Hospital and since then he has got stronger. "We stayed at the hospital for a week with him and I had to nip out every now and then to attend the farm but loads of people rallied to help." Since then, another rash led his parents to take him back to the hospital but it turned out to be a false alarm. Mr Kirkham said: "We are lucky, it seems he will not suffer any ill effects although his hearing will have to be checked when he is older. "He started nursery last week which was great. But I can't forget staring at the bed when he stopped breathing and feeling so totally helpless. "Parents should be aware of meningitis and never take any chances if they suspect their child has it."
