Punjabi Spice, Abbey Food Store and Sizzling Kitchen all score zero stars in hygiene tests

AN Indian takeaway that was infamously targeted by a gang with a pickaxe and shovel is again in the headlines – this time for scoring zero out of five in a hygiene inspection. Punjabi Spice in Harvey Road, Derby, was told to make "urgent improvements" following an inspection on February 20. Sajjad Hanif, who took over the business last May, said that he was shocked to be given the zero star rating. He said: "I thought that we were keeping everything clean. "The inspector said the doors needed painting, the putty around the sink needed changing and the temperature on the front cabinet was wrong. "We are putting the things right and have until May before the next inspection." Ratings are decided on how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law. In total, 104 premises across Derby were inspected in February and Punjabi Spice was among three places that scored zero out of five. The full list can be found below. Abbey Food Store, on the corner of Abbey Street and Burton Road, was another to get the lowest rating. The Derby Telegraph tried to contact the shop for a comment but received no response. Sizzling Kitchen, about 150 yards away in Burton Road, also scored zero. In this case, Derby City Council ordered the premises to shut immediately because of what it described as a "serious mouse infestation". The diner was allowed to reopen 10 days later after an £8,500 refit, which it had been planning anyway, addressed the problem. Mohammed Shamoon, who has owned the premises for just over a year, said previously he had shut down the premises a "a good few hours" before the council issued an emergency prohibition notice. He told the Derby Telegraph that wire wool had been used to fill holes which mice may have got through and that the property was now "air-tight". HERE is a full list of the food hygiene scores for Derby premises inspected in February. 0/5 – Sizzling Kitchen, Burton Road; Abbey Food Store, Abbey Street; Punjabi Spice, Harvey Road. 1/5 – Khyber Pass Karahi, Normanton Road; Little Acorns Private Day Nursery, Thornhill Road; Chicken Cottage, Normanton Road; Spicy Bites, Derby Lane; Hong Shing, London Road. 2/5 – Finale Thai Tapas and Dining, The Strand. 3/5 – Holbrook Fish Bar, Holbrook Road; Jonty Farmer, Kedleston Road; Oaklands, Oaklands Avenue; Pizza Cielo, Royal Glen Park; Ascot Fish Bar, Osmaston Road; J Marcer Bakery, Brighton Road; Pak Foods, Normanton Road; Silk Mill Ale and Cider House, Full Street; Tuck Inn, Mansfield Road; Lis Fish Bar, Chaddesden Lane; Bryers Heritage Ltd, Markeaton Lane; Willow Sports Centre, Willow Row; Al-Nawabz, Osmaston Road; Dulwich Manor, Dulwich Road; The Flower Pot, King Street. 4/5 – Cafe Number Six, Ashbourne Road; The Chestnut Tree, Portland Street; Ambala Sweet Centre, Normanton Road; East Ocean, Brackens Lane; Super Polski Delikatesy, St Thomas Road; Taste Buds, Elton Road; The Gables, Morley Road; Chets Stores, Berwick Avenue; Hong Kong Takeaway, Monk Street; Good Food Inn, Kedleston Street; Kam Yin, Nottingham Road; Mediterranean Cafe, Morledge; Purewal General Store, Cornwall Road; Ridgeway Food & Wine, Ridgeway; Nads Fast Food Takeaway, Morledge; Cobbers Cafe, Sacheverel Street; Balti Nights, Wordsworth Avenue; Premier Stores, Clarence Road; The Birches, Station Road; The Secret Dining Company, Exeter Arms, Exeter Place; Revolucion de Cuba, The Strand; The Royal British Legion, Chellaston Road; Zaza Pizza, Osmaston Road; BBQ Express, Normanton Road; Imperial Dragon, Shardlow Road; Nickys Fish Bar And Restaurant, Osmaston Road; The Mile, Friar Gate. 5/5 – Caffe Grazia, London Road; First Friends Private Day Nursery Ltd, Chaddesden Park Road; Harrington Nursery School, Harrington Street; Littleover Live at Home Scheme, Constable Drive; PP Derby (Kaila Ltd), Nottingham Road; Florence Nightingale Care Homes, Village Street; Subway, Kingsway Retail Park; Orchard Nursery School, Derby Road; Subway, Derwent Parade; Abbeydale Nursing Home, Duffield Road; Bean Caffe, Ford Street; Birds (Derby) Ltd, Nottingham Road; Caterlink Ltd, Locomotive Way; Morrisons Local, Ashbourne Road; Aldi Store, Nottingham Road; Charcoal Grill, Wardwick; Mercy Care Centre, Highfields Park Drive; Orchard Garden Day Nursery, Green Lane; Chaira Brothers Store, Kelso Walk; The Limes, Limes Avenue; The Lodge, Grange Road; League Of Friends Shop & Store, London Road Community Hospital, London Road; Mitie Catering, Jubilee House, St Christopher Way; Bluebell Park Care Home, Rowallan Way; The Spice Lounge, Friar Gate; China Town, Uttoxeter New Road; Friars Bar And Steak House, Friar Gate; Gastronom Natali, Normanton Road; Sing Sing Jan, Wiltshire Road; Sodexho Catering and Support Services, Sinfin Lane; Luca's Plaice, Edmund Road; Mackworth Balti, Humbleton Drive; Mr Pretzel, Westfield Centre; Play and Learn Nursery, Carlton Road; Quad Cafe Bar, Market Place; Subway, Victoria Street; The Argosy, Manor Road; Children Day Nursery, Rosehill Early Years Centre, Lower Dale Road; Bagel Nash, Westfield Derby; Field Lane Community Centre Playgroup, Field Lane; Cube Cafe Bar, Déda, Chapel Street; Freddy's Play Kingdom, Nottingham Road; Derwent Coffee, Market Hall; Hackwood Farm, Radbourne Lane; Pizza Hut Delivery, Uttoxeter New Road; The Cottage Private Day Nursery, Uttoxeter Road; Arboretum Primary School, Corden Street; J S Sainsbury, Kingsway; Oakwood Church Lunch Club, Bishops Drive; St Andrew's School, St Andrew's View; Gee's Sandwich Bar in Midland Road; Slice Of India, Mansfield Road.

Derby food hygiene scores: Who are the five-star winners?

YESTERDAY, The Derby Telegraph reveal the restaurants and takeaways in Derby with a zero-star hygiene rating. Today, we speak to those who have earned top marks.

AFTER three major blows, sandwich bar owners Paul and Kirsty Young have fought back strongly. Now, however, they have the missing ingredient – a five-out-of-five hygiene certificate.

"It's massive for us," said Paul. "Absolutely massive. People look for your hygiene score."

It is about time the husband and wife team, co-owners of Gee's Sandwich Bar in Midland Road, Derby, had some good news.

Derbyshire Royal Infirmary became London Road Community Hospital in 2009, with most of its departments closing, leaving a huge dent in the couple's takings.

In May last year, they were dealt a further blow with the closure of the Midland Road Post Office, directly opposite their shop.

And then, just three months later, things went from bad to worse when London Road closed for a year so a new bridge could be built.

Because of these three setbacks, Paul and Kirsty have had to work day and night to keep the 40-year-old business afloat. In a bid to boost turnover, they now open throughout the day.

Paul said: "In the morning, we are a cafe serving full English breakfasts and hash browns – that sort of thing.

"At lunchtime we are a sandwich bar, selling fresh sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis.

"And now, in the evenings, we do bistro nights and serve tapas food. We do these nights most Fridays and Saturdays and are taking party bookings. We never say 'no'.

"It means some days we're open at 8am and don't finish till midnight. That's what we have to do to keep going.

"We arrived here in October 2006. Since then, what's happened down here has been dreadful.

"We've lost the hospital, the post office and London Road is closed.

"Meanwhile, they've done up the walkway up to town. We suffer from that as it takes people away from where we are.

"And now the Green Lane end of town is going to have £2 million spent on it.

"Where we are is like a forgotten land."

Paul said the top hygiene rating was a crucial lifeline.

He said: "We're over the moon. We've worked so hard for it.

"Our kitchen is quite old so we've always been rated a four.

"Because of the setbacks we've faced, we decided to make a big effort to get five out of five so that we could use that to attract more customers.

"To do all the flooring and decor cost around £2,000. It was worth it because now we've been upgraded to a five."

In an inspection, establishments are checked for their level of compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures, compliance with structural requirements and confidence in management.

These scores can range from zero to five, with five being "very good"

Ratings are given to restaurants, takeaways, cafes, sandwich shops, pubs and hotels.

Schools, hospitals and care homes are also rated, along with supermarkets, bakeries and delis.

Among the places celebrating a top hygiene score is Slice Of India buffet restaurant in Mansfield Road.

Its general manager Ben Corner said it was fantastic news for the restaurant.

He said: "We were rating a five last year as well and we're really pleased to have kept it at that.

"A lot of high-profile places don't get five so for us to get it is fantastic.

"For me, it's important to get a five because it shows you're doing everything right.

"Also, customers put a lot of emphasis on it. It's definitely something people look for and pay attention to."

Slice of India has 45 employees and Mr Corner said they all deserved credit.

He said: "It's very much a team effort. All the staff are professional and take the job seriously.

"It's not just about keeping everywhere clean. You have to keep all the paperwork in order and they've done that."

Derby City Council leader asked to talk about cuts and challenges at Derby Cathedral

THE leader of Derby City Council has been invited to speak to the public at Derby Cathedral about "making tough decisions in tough times". Paul Bayliss was asked to speak at a city forum by officials at Derby Cathedral - who said they felt "the people of Derby need to hear clearly what he and the council are wrestling with in these very tough times". The session will take place on Wednesday, April 9, from 12.45pm, followed by lunch. A spokeswoman for Derby Cathedral said: "Derby City Council, like many other equivalent bodies, is facing a series of very real challenges. "Government funding is being cut and they are having to make some agonizing choices, with questions in the middle distance about whether they can even fund their statutory obligations. "The churches, the trade unions and other voluntary bodies are already asking themselves how they can step in to fill the gaps - with the recent NightShelter project as one example. "The Cathedral Chapter senses the people of Derby need to hear clearly from their council leader what he and the city council are wrestling with in these very tough times." She said the Dean of Derby, Dr John Davies, and his colleagues were keen to gather "a wide cross-section of Derby people" for the forum.

Derby County Ladies: Duncan Gibb's weekly column

JUST about every week seems to be a "big week" for Derby County Ladies and the last one and the next are no different.

The first team will be looking to secure the club's first piece of silverware this season when they defend the Derbyshire County Cup in the final against Sandiacre Town tomorrow at Belper Town FC's, Christchurch Meadow (2pm).

The final presents an excellent opportunity for fans to secure their weekly football fix with the men's side being in action at Middlesbrough and to experience the quality of women's football.

Manager John Bennett will be eager to put a disappointing 2-0 home reverse to Blackburn Rovers last weekend in the FA Women's Premier League behind him.

He will also be keen to secure the last trophy available to him before he steps down at the end of the season.

In terms of a successor, the club have now whittled the lengthy list of applicants down to a small handful , with second interviews having taken place earlier this week on the back of practical assessments at training the week before.

Subject to ratification by the club's executive committee, an announcement can be expected within the next few days.

Elsewhere, the club's under- 15s face what is basically a title decider when they entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers at Alvaston Park this morning (10.30am).

The two clubs have played 36 games between them this season and Wolves' defeat at Coventry is the only one either side have suffered – so something has to give.

Meanwhile, the table-topping under-12s moved a step closer to a league and cup double with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mackworth St Francis in the semi- final of the Notts League Cup.

We already have half an eye on next season on a number of fronts and dates for the club's annual player trials have been fixed.

These will be at Mackworth College on June 21 ,25 and 28. Further details on the club website at www.dclfc.co.uk.

Team news: Derby County unchanged at Middlesbrough but Will Hughes back on the bench

WILL Hughes returns to the Derby County squad for Saturday's Championship encounter with Middlesbrough (3pm). But the England Under-21 international has to settle for a place on the bench at the Riverside Stadium as head coach Steve McClaren names an unchanged starting line-up on his first return to his old club. Hughes, who has missed the past two matches with a hip injury, replaces fellow midfielder James Bailey as one of the seven substitutes. Jamie Ward (hamstring) and Simon Dawkins (groin) remain sidelined. "It is credit to the three who are in midfield at the moment that the head coach has decided to stick with them, because they have done the job properly and it would be unfair on them to leave them out," said Rams coach Paul Simpson. "So, hopefully, they will carry on where they left of, show the same level of performance and result and it will be a nice easy decision for Tuesday (at Blackpool). "We want them to go out and enjoy it today but, at the same time, work hard and earn the right to play in what will be a difficult game – but go and show people that we deserve to be in these places and we can push on even further." Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka makes one enforced change to his side following last weekend's 2-0 win at Brighton, with Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah replacing the suspended Dean Whitehead in midfield. MIDDLESBROUGH: Konstantopoulos, Varga, Gibson, Omeruo, Friend, Chalobah, L Williams, Leadbitter, Adomah, Tomlin, Graham. Subs: Steele (gk), Butterfield, Ledesma, Kamara, Main, Atkinson, Kitching. DERBY COUNTY: Grant, Wisdom, Keogh, Buxton, Forsyth, Thorne, Bryson, Hendrick, Russell, Bamford, Martin. Subs: Legzdins (gk), Naylor, O'Brien, Whitbread, Eustace, Hughes, Sammon. REFEREE: A Haines (Tyne & Wear).

Derby County's Chris Martin grateful for team-mates' help in goal quest

CHRIS Martin has shared the credit for his goalscoring exploits with his Derby County team-mates. Martin took his season's tally to 19 in last Saturday's 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic. One more will see the striker become the first Derby player for 18 years to hit 20 goals in a single campaign. The last man to achieve that feat was Dean Sturridge, as he helped the Rams to promotion in 1995-96. Martin has seven games to reach the milestone – plus a possible three more if Derby reach the Championship play-offs. And the former Norwich City front man paid tribute to his colleagues for helping him get into this position. "The lads deserve huge credit because, without them, I wouldn't get any goals," said the 25-year-old. "As a striker, I need service. "Every striker will tell you, you need to have chances. "You'll miss a few and, hopefully, you'll score more than you miss. "I've had some great crosses and great assists this season. "Without them, I don't think I would have got anywhere near 20 goals, to be perfectly honest. "I think the credit for the goals and the victories goes down to a real team effort." Martin, who joined the Rams on a permanent basis last summer following a loan spell, is keen to reach his personal milestone as quickly as possible. His first chance should come today, when Derby take on Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium (3pm). "Obviously, it would be very nice to get it there," said Martin. "I'll be focusing on trying to get that 20th goal at Middlesbrough to help the team out and, hopefully, contribute to a positive result. "As I always say, the next one is the most important and you can't get too far ahead of yourself in terms of looking at targets. "In this case, the next one will be 20 and I hope it comes along pretty quickly." Despite topping the Rams' goal chart, Martin, who has made 42 appearances this term, is in no mood to rest on his laurels. "It's a pretty good return, though I would have liked quite a few more," he said. "Strikers always want to score every chance they get but I know that doesn't happen. "Playing in a team like this – an attack-minded team that creates a lot of chances – makes my job a lot easier. "I know I'm going to get several opportunities per game. "Hopefully, they keep falling for me between now and the end of the season." With Martin's help, Derby are currently the second highest scorers in the division, behind leaders Leicester City. Many opponents have struggled to cope with their free-flowing style under manager Steve McClaren. "I think we play as good football as most teams in the division," said Martin. "We like to get it down and play football in the right way. "I think you need to do that if you want to get out of this division, most of the time. "Sometimes, you have to dig in and fight and scrap – and I think we've done that at times as well when it's been asked of us. "You need a mixture of those things. "The manager likes to play football the right way and so do the players. "And I think we've shown this season that we're more than capable of doing that."

Half-time: Derby County and Middlesbrough goalless at the break

IT was still goalless after an uninspiring first half between Middlesbrough and Derby County at the Riverside Stadium. There were few chances created by either side in the opening 45 minutes on Teesside. Former Rams loanee Danny Graham had the first sight of goal after a quarter of an hour but fired high and wide from an angle. At the other end, Andre Wisdom fizzed a volleyed centre across the face of goal, while Chris Martin, looking for his 20th goal of the season, saw a shot well blocked by Ben Gibson. Richard Keogh and Jake Buxton were both called upon to make important blocks themselves as the defences held firm. Patrick Bamford cut in from the right on to his left foot but shot well over from 25 yards. The best chance of the half fell to Boro after 35 minutes. Lee Tomlin broke clear after good work from Graham, only to shoot straight at Lee Grant from 15 yards. Craig Bryson headed a difficult chance wide from Jeff Hendrick's cross, under pressure from Kenneth Omeruo. And with 44 minutes on the clock, George Thorne stung the hands of Dimi Konstantopoulos with a well-hit long-range effort.

THE father of Derbyshire cricket player Tom Poynton has died in a road crash. Wicketkeeper Tom was also involved in the incident, which killed his father Keith, which happened yesterday evening. Police have confirmed a 57-year-old man died after the Ferrari he was driving left the road and hit a tree. They said the crash happened in Caldwell Road, near Rosliston, on Friday at about 8pm, and the 23-year-old passenger was taken to Burton Queen's Hospital with serious, but not-life threatening, injuries. Floral tributes have been left at the scene of the crash this morning and hundreds of messages have been posted on Twitter paying tribute to Keith and offering sympathies to the Poynton family. Derbyshire County Cricket Club said Tom was taken to hospital by ambulance and treated overnight for a "suspected fracture and other associated injuries". The club's match at Leicestershire tomorrow has been postponed. In a statement, the club said: "Everyone at the club are deeply distressed and concerned for Tom and his family. "In consultation with the ECB and Leicestershire CCC, the decision has been taken to postpone the LV County Championship Division Two game, which was due to start tomorrow at Grace Road. "The fixture has been provisionally rescheduled to take place on Sunday 8 June to Wednesday 11 June. "The Second XI friendly fixture between Derbyshire and Leicestershire, which was due to start at The 3aaa County Ground this week on Monday 7 April has also been postponed and will be moved to a date to be agreed." Tom, described as a highly-regarded wicketkeeper, has been with the club since the age of 11 and made his first-team debut during the 2007 Twenty20 group stages. He made his Championship debut against Middlesex in July the same year. Chief executive Simon Storey said: "We are a small close knit group here at Derbyshire and Tom's dad was well-known to our players and coaching staff. "We are still trying to come to terms with the devastating news and at the moment our concerns are solely with Tom and his family at this difficult time. "We are deeply indebted to the chairman, chief executive and director of cricket at Leicestershire CCC who have supported the decision to postpone the game. I am very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to the opening fixture." A statement from Leicestershire Cricket Club's website said: "Sunday's match between Leicestershire CCC and Derbyshire CCC has been postponed. "A Derbyshire player has been involved in a serious road accident in which a close relative has lost their life. "As a mark of respect, the game has been postponed until Sunday, June 8, and the ECB has given their blessing to the request. "Our thoughts are with Derbyshire CCC at this tragic time." Tina Costa, 45, who lives in Linton Road, near where the collision took place, said she knew of Keith and spoke of her sadness about his death. She said: "I was very shocked when I found out. It's very tragic circumstances for it to happen. "Keith was a very nice person and he used to walk his dog through the village. He was very polite and would always speak. He was also very well-liked. "I know Tom and absolutely everybody is thinking of him and his family right now. I really hope they are ok." "It's just been a big shock." Sally-Ann Miller, 53, and her husband David, of Rosliston, said they knew Keith and could not believe the news. She said: "This is the most shocking thing that has happened in my 53 years here. It's come totally out of the blue. It must be an absolute nightmare for his family. "My sister went to school with Keith and he was a lovely chap." David said: "He was a real family man and always put them first. He lived in the village all of his life and was a hard worker." A floral tribute left at the scene of the crash said: "Keith, I did not know you but I was the only witness to your accident. "It is such a shame you have lost your life. My thoughts are with your family and I hope son is ok. "Peace is with you Keith." Tributes and condolences have poured in the Poynton family via Twitter:

PINEAU De Re, owned by Derbyshire businessman John Provan, has won the 2014 Crabbies Grand National. Provan, originally from Glasgow, moved to Doveridge, Derbyshire in the 1980s and is a former amateur Flat jockey. He now runs a print and packaging business, Printcut Boxfast. The 11-year-old was a 25-1 shot after finishing third in the Pertemps Final over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival and moved into the race travelling powerfully. He jumped the final fence with jockey Leighton Aspell in a clear lead and his pursuers never looked like bridging the gap as he galloped all the way to the line to secure a momentous five-length victory. Balthazar King ran a fine race to finish second, ahead of champion jockey Tony McCoy aboard Double Seven. Aspell, who at one stage had retired from riding, said: "It's a wonderful day, this is what we do it for. "I've been watching the National since I was a very young boy. "As much as you enjoy sharing everyone's success, you crave a bit too. "To get a chance to ride in the National is a great thing, and to get on one with a chance is even better." Owner Provan said: "We saw a window of opportunity with him as we didn't think he was as exposed as his age suggests and Richard has done a marvellous job of improving him since. "He was very much bought with Aintree in mind."

BURTON Albion closed to within three points of the automatic promotion spots as Callum McFadzean's first goal for the club gave them a narrow win over visiting Plymouth Argyle at the Pirelli Stadium. The on-loan Sheffield United midfielder netted an opportunistic strike after a mistake in the Pilgrims back-line to put the Brewers deservedly in front. The Brewers had plenty of chances before and after the opener, but in the final 20 minutes, were pressed back as the Pilgrims sought an equaliser to keep their own play-offs hopes intact.Gary Rowett made two changes from the side who claimed a 0-0 draw at York City last weekend, with Phil Edwards and Adam McGurk dropping out through injury. Edwards made the bench after illness, with David Gray taking his spot at right-back and Jimmy Phillips slotting into midfield, while Gary Alexander replaced McGurk (thigh) up front. And Alexander was at the heart of much of what was good about Albion in the opening spell, winning key headers, holding the ball up and issuing orders around the pitch with authority. He also had two good chances to open the scoring, one blocked at the far post after being found by Billy Kee, the second a volley from a corner that went just over. Better opportunities came the way of Kee - whose shot on the turn was saved by Jake Cole - as well as Phillips and Damien McCrory, who both saw shots from wide positions rattle the woodwork. In the 26th minute, an error in the Plymouth defence saw Matty Palmer through on goal, and though his shot was blocked, Kee squared the loose ball for McFadzean to slot home. Right at the end of the half, McCrory had another go, letting fly from 35 yards, but Cole palmed his shot away. Plymouth were much better in the second half, as Burton once again defended too deeply and invited pressure. Ex-Brewer Gurrieri and Pilgrim skipper Conor Hourihane combined twice, with the latter denied on both occasions by Rob Lainton. The Brewers had a great chance to seal the win late on when they finally broke clear of their lines, but when Phillips' shot - after a great run - was saved, substitute Michael Symes, making his first appearance since November, was unable to turn the rebound home. Earlier, Symes' cross into the box was headed down by McFadzean, but Phillips flashed volley was inches wide. Plymouth won a series of corners and got the ball into dangerous areas, with only an impressive defensive display from Ian Sharps and co, up against a significant physical presence, securing the points. BURTON ALBION (4-4-2): Lainton; Edwards, Sharps, Cansdell-Sherriff, McCrory; Phillips, Bell, Palmer, McFadzean (Weir 81); Kee (MacDonald 56), Alexander (Symes 69); subs: Lyness, Edwards, Hemmings, Knowles. PLYMOUTH ARGYLE (3-5-2): Cole; Trotman (Wotton 46), Blanchard, Nelson; Berry (Morgan 66), Gurrieri, Hourihane, Young (Blizzard 73), Purrington; Reid, Showunmi; subs: Dawson, Boco, Harvey, Thomas.

LEICESTER City have been promoted to the Premier League this afternoon - without even kicking a ball. Defeats for both QPR and Derby County coupled with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night saw the Foxes end a 10-year absence from football's elite division. The Leicester players took to Twitter to celebrate their promotion. Forward Gary Taylor-Fletcher wrote: "We are Premier League, say we are Premier League! Get in." Former Leicester and England striker Gary Lineker, who scored 95 goals for the Foxes, tweeted: "Leicester City are promoted to the Premier League. A sentence I've been waiting to say for 10 years." Elsewhere, Watford held second placed Burnley to a 1-1 draw while Leeds United suffered their seventh defeat in eight games as Martyn Waghorn's first-half goal gave play-off chasing Wigan victory at the DW Stadium. Former Leicester man Waghorn rewarded Wigan's first-half dominance with a low finish from the edge of the area. Nottingham Forest were beaten 2-1 by visitors Millwall and there was a 1-0 win for Reading at Charlton's relegation. Danny Williams' second-half goal proved enough for Reading. At the other end of the Championship table, bottom club Yeovil beat Blackpool 2-1.

DERBYSHIRE businessman John Provan says he is still pinching himself after his horse, Pineau De Re, won the 2014 Crabbies Grand National at Aintree. Provan, whose owns print and packaging business Printcut Boxfast, moved to Derbyshire in the 1980s from his native Glasgow. He currently lives in Doveridge. Provan said: "We have brought everybody to Aintree, we are all sharing in the magic moment in time. It's fantastic, absolutely fantastic. We love taking on the big guys. We have come against Paul Nicholls and all the jockeys - it's hard to get a really good jockey when you want one. "Leighton Aspell did the job absolutely perfect today - we couldn't have asked any more from a jockey. I have to say a big thank you to all of Richard's staff, such lovely staff. They all do their job 100 per cent and it's just fantastic for them. "I had my heart in my mouth in the closing stages. It's a dream come true and we have such a lovely horse."

DERBY County suffered a 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough in their Championship encounter at the Riverside Stadium. Nathaniel Chalobah, on loan from Chelsea, scored the only goal of the game after 69 minutes. However, other results went Derby's way and they still have an 11-point cushion inside the play-off zone, with six games to go.

Derby started the second half brightly, with Craig Bryson's forcing Konstantopoulos into a smart low save from 20 yards, before Bamford headed Johnny Russell's deep cross onto the top of the net. Wisdom flashed a shot narrowly wide of the far post after Bamford's cross was only half-cleared. Then, after 65 minutes, Albert Adomah volleyed wide from 15 yards after latching on Chalobah's lofted pass. The deadlock was broken four minutes later. Substitute Emmanuel Ledesma found Chalobah, who had drifted into the box, and the midfielder finished low across Grant from 12 yards. Derby introduced Will Hughes, back from injury, in a bid to get something from the game. They had a chance to equalise five minutes from time when Bryson delivered a teasing free kick in from the right but Jake Buxton could not quite find the target at the far post. Moments later, substitute Conor Sammon worked his way into the box but fired wide under pressure. MIDDLESBROUGH: Konstantopoulos, Varga, Gibson, Omeruo, Friend, Chalobah, L Williams (Butterfield, 79), Leadbitter, Adomah (Main, 90+2), Tomlin (Ledesma, 59), Graham. Other subs: Legzdins (gk), O'Brien, Whitbread, Eustace. REFEREE: A Haines (Tyne & Wear). ATTENDANCE: 15,234 (1,108 away fans).
