NUISANCE motorcyclists have been riding dangerously around Alvaston Park.

Police officers from the area's safer neighbourhood team have received reports from residents that motorcycles are being ridden in a dangerous manner.

Sgt Simon Hawley, who manages the team, said: "This mainly happens at weekends.

"The motorcycles are not displaying registration plates and are being ridden at speed across the football pitches during games and along the pathways through the park. This is extremely dangerous for people using the park and clearly illegal.

"We appeal to the community to provide information that will help us identify the individuals committing this type of behaviour.

"We will take positive action and if necessary seize the bikes if we can identify the people involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or e-mail east.neighbourhoods@derby shire.pnn.police.uk.

Osmaston Road, Derby: Driver held after cyclist dies on city street

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention after a fatal road accident in Osmaston Road, Derby.

The incident - believed to involve a HGV but police said it was an "unknown vehicle" - happened close to the junction with Shaftesbury Street just before 1pm yesterday.

A male cyclist, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed the road while they carried out their investigations. It was reopened at 5pm.

Fay Walton, 28, owns a shop near to where it happened. She said: "This is the third accident I have seen on the road in the last six months.

It's very shocking to hear of the death. I'm a cyclist myself and it's a worrying situation.

"The traffic had been very bad, but at around 5pm it had improved."

There were reports that up to ten police cars attended the scene, together with an ambulance.

A number of people stood watching the scene from the door to their homes.

Officers in unmarked cars also attended while the road closure was in place.

The incident caused major traffic problems in and out of the city, as Osmaston Road had become a diversion route following the long-term closure of London Road while bridge works are carried out. A diversion was put in place along Ascot Drive and through Pride Park.

Resident Jane Prjanikov, of Ivy Square, said: "I heard and then saw a lot of police activity which was quite alarming. I was quite shocked to see what was happening. You never expect anything like this. I'd like to give my condolences to his family."

Martin Cooper, 21, who lives in Horton Street, off Osmaston Road, said: "I hope he rests in peace. I've lived here all my life and this is the saddest thing I have seen on the road. I never want to see this happen again. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time."

Craig Goodband, 31, of Dexter Street, was also shocked. He said: "I was woken up by all of the commotion and the police cars that came past. It's very bad news. It's saddened me and I'd like to say 'God bless'. I really do not like to see things like this happen."

Philip Winfield, 28, of Allenton works on Osmaston Road and said he was alarmed at the amount of police in the area.

He said: "There was a heavy presence with around ten officers at one point. It definitely surprised me and it was a lot of commotion to see. I'd never seen it for a road accident before. There are quite a few cyclists around here but I do not know what they can do to make the area safer for them."

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: "Police are requesting anyone who witnessed this collision or can recall seeing the pedal cyclist in that vicinity at that time, travelling towards the city centre, to contact 101."

FOOTBALL supporters at today's Leeds United v Derby County match held a minute's silence for Ann Maguire, the teacher stabbed to death in front of her pupils at a school in Leeds. Mrs Maguire, 61, was killed as she taught a lesson at Corpus Christi Catholic College on Monday morning. Her family have since paid tribute to long-serving Spanish teacher, describing her as "our shining light" who brightened the world for so many. A 15-year-old boy has been charged with Mrs Maguire's murder. The boy, who cannot be named, is due to stand trial in November. Derby Telegraph reporter Chris Watson, covering today's match at Elland Road, said: It was an impeccably observed minute's silence in memory of the Leeds teacher."

IN a dramatic final day in the SkyBet Championship it was relief for Birmingham City and disappointment for Doncaster Rovers as the Blues managed to avoid relegation to League One. A last minute equaliser for Birmingham at Bolton Wanderers, scored by Paul Caddis, meant that they preserved their Championship status for another season as that game ended in a 2-2 draw. Doncaster, managed by former Derby County player Paul Dickov, were beaten 1-0 by champions Leicester City. David Nugent got the Foxes' only goal from the penalty spot. There was disappointment for Wigan Athletic and Reading as they were beaten to the final play-off place by Brighton & Hove Albion, who play the Rams on Thursday. Wigan lost 4-3 at Blackpool while Reading drew 2-2 with Burnley.

Burton Albion face Southend United in play-offs after defeat at Roots Hall

IF this was a dress rehearsal for the League Two play-off semi-finals, Burton Albion will hope their leading lights perform better than their understudies after a 1-0 defeat to Southend United. York City's draw at Scunthorpe United means that these sides will face each other again in the end-of-season shake-up, and with that double-header in mind, manager Gary Rowett rang five changes as he sought to keep his team fit. And few of the understudies impressed as the Brewers went down to a 22nd-minute free header from Barry Corr. Star players Ian Sharps and Billy Kee were left at home, while Gary Alexander, Alex MacDonald and Callum McFadzean dropped to the bench. In came David Gray, the recently-recalled Chris Hussey, Marcus Harness, Ashley Hemmings and Michael Symes. Phil Edwards moved across to centre-half, with Gray slotting in at right-back and Hussey on the other side. In a 4-5-1, Symes was the one, flanked by Harness and Hemmings, but neither winger shone after being given the chance to make a case for inclusion next weekend. Hussey was probably Albion's player of the half, making key interceptions at the back and setting up a good chance that Robbie Weir skied. Weir also had the visitors best chance as, after being fed in the box, his shot was charged down by keeper Daniel Bentley. By that point, Rowett's side were trailing after Kevan Hurst's cross from the left went unchecked and Corr rose ahead of the Burton defence to nod past Lyness. After the break, neither team looked too keen to take risks, with the play-offs in mind, although Albion gained teeth up front with the introduction of Zeli Ismail, Dominic Knowles and, later, Alex MacDonald. The former pair combined well at times, as they have done to the tune of three goals this season, while Matty Palmer set up Ismail with a clever short corner, but the on-loan Wolves winger blazed over. The first leg of the play-offs will take place at the Pirelli a week tomorrow, with the return leg back here the following Sunday. Both games kick-off at noon.

Derby County draw 1-1 at Leeds United

DERBY County's final game before heading into the Championship play-offs ended in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. Simon Dawkins gave the Rams an early lead at Elland Road but Matt Smith equalised five minutes into the second half. The result ended Derby's remarkable run of 10 successive wins against Leeds but saw them break the club record for the highest number of points gained in a season - 85. Results elsewhere mean that Steve McClaren's men will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the play-off semi-final. Derby almost opened the scoring with less than two minutes on the clock. Craig Forsyth advanced into the box following a one-two with Conor Sammon and struck his shot well, only for Jack Butland to palm the ball around the post. The visitors were not to be denied for long, though. Patrick Bamford's chip into the box found Jeff Hendrick and although the midfielder missed his kick before being denied by Butland, Dawkins was on hand to bundle the ball in from close range. Leeds responded with former Derby loanee Michael Tonge's powerful goalbound shot, which was blocked by Sammon, after Tom Lees' header had been deflected behind for a corner. Sammon then raced clear after combining well with Bamford but fired wide of the near post from an angle. The height of Smith was causing Derby problems and Lee Grant twice kept out headers from the big striker in quick succession. Another Smith header was cleared off the line before Danny Pugh's follow-up stung the hands of Grant. The Rams were still looking a threat on the break, though. After 21 minutes, Will Hughes picked out Dawkins in the box and his cross-shot was just missed by Sammon before being pushed away by Butland. Moments later, Jason Pearce headed back across goal from a corner and Scott Wootton's effort was cleared off the line by Hughes. Leeds top scorer Ross McCormack latched on to a Smith flick-on but his lob cleared the bar. Grant was called into action again to parry Michael Brown's swerving 30-yarder before dropping gratefully on the loose ball. It was end-to-end stuff but there were no more goals before the interval.

Tonge nearly levelled within a minute of the restart but his shot from the edge of the box was inches wide. But Leeds were back on terms five minutes into the second half. McCormack beat Richard Keogh before sliding a pass through to Smith, who neatly lifted the ball over Grant from 10 yards. This fired up the hosts and Tonge had a penalty shout turned down after clashing with Andre Wisdom. Then, Pugh's mis-hit volley fell into the path of Smith, who blazed over on this occasion. On the hour, McCormack's cross caused havoc in the Derby six-yard box but Grant grabbed the ball in the nick of time. Hendrick's through ball released Bamford a minute later but Butland parried his shot from a tight angle. Zak Whitebread was booked for a foul on Rodolph Austin just outside the box and McCormack's 77th-minute free kick was beaten away by Grant. Five minutes from time, Aidan White's cross from the right reached Pugh at the far post but he could only head wide. A couple of minutes later, Pugh crossed for McCormack, who put his header straight at Grant. LEEDS UNITED: Butland, Wootton, Lees, Pearce, Pugh, Tonge, Brown, Austin, Murphy (White, 46), McCormack, Smith. Other subs: Cairns (gk), Poleon, Walters, Dawson, Thompson, Hunt. University of Derby HIV scare: Legal experts say students affected may be entitled to compensation

LEGAL experts have said University of Derby students who have been told they may have been put at risk of developing HIV could be entitled to compensation. The university has written to 629 of its past and present students, asking them to go to their GP or a hospital for a blood test. These letters were sent as part of an investigation into potential "errors" with vaccinations and blood tests given to students by one healthcare worker between September 2005 and October 2013. It is understood the worker – contracted from outside the university to work within its occupational health service – incorrectly reused syringe barrels, putting students at risk of viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Students affected were on seven different courses and were required to go through health screening and get vaccinations before work placements in hospitals, health centres and other places. Health experts said, originally, 606 students had been highlighted because the initial of the healthcare worker had appeared on their records. But they said further checks had identified 23 incomplete records without an initial. They said they wanted to "err on the side of caution" by advising these students to get blood tests as well. And they said they were now as "confident as they could be" all affected students had been identified. Health experts said the risk of developing an infection was "extremely low" and the offer of blood tests was a "precautionary measure". But a spokeswoman for Freeth Cartwright LLP, which has an office in Derby, said it was still a worrying time for students. She said: "The university and the regulatory bodies have highlighted how this advice for screening is a precautionary measure, given the risk of infection is believed to be very low. However, those affected now face a distressing wait for results. "Those affected by this incorrect procedure may be entitled to bring a claim in clinical negligence." The university said affected students were on the following courses – MA Art Therapy; MA Drama Therapy; MSc Occupational Therapy; BSc Occupational Therapy; BSc Diagnostic Radiography; BSc Nursing – adult and mental health; and Adv Dip in Nurse Studies. Anyone who has received a letter can call the university's advice line on 03330 142479.

DERBY County boss Steve McClaren was pleased with the test his side face at Leeds United ahead of their Championship play-off semi-final against Brighton. The Rams drew 1-1 at Elland Road in the final match of their regular campaign. With nothing riding on the game in terms of league position, McClaren made six changes to his starting line-up. At full-time, Brighton were confirmed as third-placed Derby's play-off opponents, thanks to a late win at Nottingham Forest. "We wanted to turn in a performance and be hard to beat and we did that," said McClaren. "They gave us a hard test but we showed tremendous attitude. "Over the last few weeks we have cemented our place in the play-offs and our level of performance hasn't dropped. "When I took the job, I would have said you were mad if you had told me we would finish where we are, but the players have been magnificent, adding consistency to their game."

Weekend events: Art in the Round, University of Derby fun day and vintage cars at Castle Donington

Thousands of people across Derbyshire took the opportunity to get out and about this weekend to enjoy some of the colourful and entertaining events taking place.

CLUTCHING her little Despicable Me minion keyring tightly, three-year-old Ruby Swan was delighted with her memento from the day's frivolities.

But she does not have to worry that it will be the only way to remember the Art in the Round event, with organisers hopeful they can stage the two-day festival again next year.

It was the first time the event, at Derby College's Roundhouse campus, had been put together and it saw 74 artists and about 1,000 visitors come through the doors.

It featured oil, pastel and watercolour painting, jewellery, photography, ceramics, textiles, rubber stamping, batik, lace making, mosaics and wooden toys – with workshops available in a wide range of arts and crafts.

Organiser Sharron Hood – who worked to arrange the event with Derby College, the Quad arts centre, Peak District Artisans, Ruth Grey Images, lace maker Louise West and artist Pete Gill – said: "It was a very successful two days over the weekend.

"The artwork was fantastic, of really high quality, and I think both the stallholders and the public were delighted with what they saw.

"I think there were lots of different things for people to enjoy – like our featured artist, John Connolly, who produced four paintings at the event while people watched him work.

"And we also had a guest speaker, Pete Mosley, the business editor of Craft and Design magazine, who supports individuals to set up their own creative businesses – which I think was also popular.

"As it was the first event, it was a learning curve and there are things we would do differently but there had been talk that, if it was successful, we would be able to hold the event again next year, so that's really exciting."

And the Art in the Round event was not the only one in Derby drawing in the crowds during the bank holiday weekend.

About 3,000 people turned up at the University of Derby for its family fun day – featuring sports such as archery, lacrosse and netball, science experiments, arts and crafts, a barbecue and live music.

Several cute creatures, including the meerkat, were also on show at the university's Kedleston Road campus, while other entertainment included a quiz and a Science of Star Wars talk.

Angela Drinkwater, from the university, said: "We're very pleased with how the day went and it was definitely busier than when we held it last year.

"It was an opportunity for the university to open its doors to the community and let families come in and take a look.

"A lot of people in the city don't get to come to the university but, at this event, they could get a taste for what it's like here and take part in lots of different activities."

And professor John Coyne, vice-chancellor of the university, said: "It's very exciting to showcase the fantastic facilities on offer and give everyone who attends the chance to get involved."

Meanwhile, in Castle Donington, more than 20 historic cars were involved a parade around the streets on Saturday.

It was part of the Donington Historic Festival – a three-day event being held at the nearby Donington Park circuit to showcase vintage cars from across the country.

And the parade was arranged by festival organisers, the town's parish council and bosses at the circuit.

Vehicles involved complete the route twice before parking in the Market Place, where crowds who had lined the streets to see them were able to talk to the drivers.

The festival – in its fourth year – continues today and features vintage cars racing on the track, memorabilia stalls, cafés, bars and food outlets.

STEVE McClaren was delighted to see his Derby County squad stand up to close examination in the draw against Leeds United. The Rams head coach made six changes to his side with the play-off semi-finals just around the corner. Out went Jake Buxton, George Thorne, Craig Bryson, Chris Martin, Jamie Ward and Johnny Russell for the final league game of the season at Elland Road. In came Zak Whitbread, John Eustace, Will Hughes, Simon Dawkins, Conor Sammon and Patrick Bamford. "The game itself was a battle but we made changes and the way we played just showed what a strong squad we have," said McClaren after the 1-1 draw. "It was a test for us, we knew it would be, and that's exactly what we needed ahead of the play-offs," he added. "We wanted a performance. We wanted to be hard to beat. We showed a tremendous attitude. "I am pleased we gave our squad minutes on the pitch because that is important. "We made six changes and the level of performance did not drop. "I think we tired in the last 20 minutes but I wanted to keep them on as long as possible to get them minutes on the pitch. "Everybody has come through and that is the key thing." McClaren has been delighted with his squad all season. "The squad is the key," he said. "Players have just stepped in and done their job, like they did at Leeds. "John Eustace was tremendous, Zak Whitbread had not had many games and it was difficult up against Leeds strikers Matt Smith and Ross McCormack, and Zak handled it very well. "Everyone has a big part to play in the next few weeks with these important play-off games." Derby cemented their position in the play-offs on Good Friday and have collected seven points from nine since thanks to wins against Barnsley and Watford, and Saturday's draw at Leeds. "The level of performance and the attitude has not dropped, and it normally does, and so that is very pleasing," said McClaren.

Derby County: Simon Dawkins delighted to be back on scoresheet

SIMON Dawkins gave Derby County boss Steve McClaren something to think about ahead of the play-offs with a goal against Leeds United. Dawkins was handed his first start since mid-March at Elland Road as McClaren made six changes for the final match of the regular Championship campaign. The former Tottenham Hotspur man took only six minutes to make his mark, bundling the ball into the net after Jeff Hendrick had been denied by keeper Jack Butland – his fourth goal of the season. Dawkins, who has been working his way back from a groin problem, played 78 minutes of the 1-1 draw before being replaced by Mason Bennett. "It's been a while since I've played close to a full game so it was great to get that," said the 26-year-old forward. "It's good to be back on the scoresheet and in and around the action again. "I've missed a lot of football this year, so it's good to get 60 or 70 minutes building up to the play-offs. "I'm ready for it and everyone else is." So, does he think he did enough to give McClaren a selection poser when he comes to pick the team to face Brighton & Hove Albion in the play-off semi-final? "Whenever you get a chance, you just want to do well," said Dawkins, who has made 27 appearances this term, including 21 starts. "Here, we have great competition for places. It's all healthy. "We're all together as one and we push each other on. I'm delighted with that. "You want to play football but the players in my position are playing really well, so I'm happy for them. "We've got good strength in depth at this club, so anyone who comes in can do a job and it just showed on Saturday that we're all ready. "We want to win every game. That's our mentality. "It didn't matter that we had nothing to play for, we just wanted to do well on the field." Derby visit the Amex Stadium on Thursday night for the first leg of their tie against Brighton, with the return leg on Sunday. "I'm really excited," said Dawkins. "We just want to do a good job. "We're really focused on it, so now it's back to work."
