Derby hospitals give thanks to long-serving volunteers

THE dedication of more than 100 volunteers who help patients at Derby's two hospitals has been recognised.

The Long Service Awards ceremony saw people rewarded for five, ten, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years of voluntary service.

Almost 500 volunteers provide a crucial service to support patients and visitors at both the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital.

These volunteers give essential support to the health service by, among other things, meeting and greeting the million patients a year who use the hospitals, operate buggy services and help in the bereavement office.

Yesterday, the long-serving volunteers were given gifts to thank them for their efforts and were then treated to a dinner.

Among those at the event, held at the Royal Derby Hospital, was Dorothy Roberts who has volunteered in Derby for 40 years.

Dorothy, who lives in Allestree, said: "Me and my husband moved up from St Albans in 1966 and one of the mums at my son's school suggested I begin volunteering.

"I started at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, as it was then, and, when that shut, moved to the Derby Road Community Hospital.

"I began just doing one day a week in the tea rooms each Thursday afternoon. Then, 17 years ago, my husband died and I had more time on my hands so I began coming in on Mondays as well."

Oddly for someone who has spent more than 40,000 hours in hospitals, Dorothy says they are not her favourite places to be – however, it has made her an expert tea maker.

She said: "I actually don't like hospitals. I tried doing a trolley round but it wasn't really for me.

"I have learnt a huge amount about how people like their tea though – and what can be done with just one tea bag.

"It is fantastic and I really enjoy helping at the tea rooms. I get an awful lot out of it.

"You might think you have a headache or a pain and then you see what is there and it stops that."

Most of the attendees at yesterday's awards were, not surprisingly, older people, however, sixth-form school students also volunteer.

They help with Derby Hospitals Trust's Mealtime Support project, working alongside nursing staff to support many frail elderly patients. Almost 100 pupils take part in the scheme each year.

Chief nurse Cathy Winfield said: "Our volunteers provide a crucial service across so many areas of our hospitals and their caring, compassionate manner means so much to patients and visitors.

"Today's awards are an opportunity for the trust to thank them all for their tireless service and dedication.

"I would like to pay my own personal tribute to each and every hospital volunteer for the work they do."

Derby students' playtime in a textile mill helps inspire fashion collection with a nod to 16th-century witchcraft

After months of preparation, designing and sourcing materials, students at the University of Derby have showcased their final collections at the Graduate Fashion Show.

IT was a family interest in witchcraft which was the eerie inspiration for Nicholas Walsh's fashion collection.

The University of Derby student said his mum and her two sisters would pretend to be witches when they were young and would conjure up a magical world to play in.

Growing up, Nicholas, now 22, said he was often taken to incense shops and haberdashery stores where he was exposed to different colours, textures and materials.

It was this dreamy-like image which became the theme for Nicholas's final compilation, Lynette – named after his aunt – at the university's Graduate Fashion Show.

But it was not only enchantment that inspired Nicholas. His father owns a drapery mill in Halifax and has created curtains for Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.

As a youngster, Nicholas would spend many hours in the warehouse learning how to create fabrics.

He said: "Before the days of health and safety, I used to play in the mills.

"I would look at what my dad did and I would look at all of the different velvet he would have. At the time, I didn't realise that being in the mill would play such a big part in my career, in my final university project."

Growing up in Halifax, Nicholas was also close to Sowerby Bridge, which holds an annual Rushbearing Festival. He explained: "In the olden days, rushes would involve people covering the floors of churches with lavender and barley."

Combining his experiences and ideas, Nicholas decided to create four different velvet outfits for his end-of-year project. From a blue babydoll dress, to a lilac top and trouser set and a green floor-length gown – his collection screams classic antiquity, with a modern touch.

Nicholas said: "I used the lavender colour taken from Rushbearing, along with the dull blue skies and grey rocks of the Yorkshire Moors, to create the final pieces.

"I also did a lot of research into French fashion historian Madame Gres, who was big in the 1920s. She was known for treating fabric like stone.

"I decided to incorporate this into my collection as well as adding a 16th and 17th-century etching style, reminiscent of the time when witch hunting was promoted."

For months, Nicholas and many other students on the University of Derby's BA (Hons) fashion studies degree course have been busy preparing for the show, which took place at Derby Theatre and saw more than a hundred original designs make their catwalk debut.

The Graduate Fashion Show – sponsored by Intu Derby shopping centre – involved 34 students and was part of the university's free public degree shows, this year called the Big Show.

Featured in the Big Show are final-year projects in crafts, fashion, textiles, fine art, film, design, theatre, visual communications, architecture, music technology, creative expressive therapies, art therapy and others.

And Nicholas won an award for the Best Collection. He said: "It was such a fantastic night. I cried when they announced that I had won.

"I couldn't believe it, it was so emotional."

Having already spent his placement year at design label Alexander McQueen, Nicholas said he hoped to move to London in July and continue designing. He said: "Working there showed me a lot about pattern cutting as well as PA work.

"I got to help out with two dresses for actresses Mila Kunis and Amanda Seyfried. It was a great experience.

"I have already started working on a new collection. I would love to work somewhere which stocked my collection – that would be the dream."

A similar vision is shared by 21-year-old fashion student Jessica Nicholls, who created a collection called Linear Suppression for the degree show.

Focusing on orthopaedic braces, asymmetrical lines and metal structures, her assemblage is edgy, contemporary and diverse.

Her outfits feature plastic, wool, leather, silk and buckles.

Jessica, who studied a foundation degree at Leicester College before completing her top-up year at the University of Derby, said: "I looked a lot at architecture to inspire my designs.

"It was so interesting to me and I wanted to explore the approach, which really pushed conventional boundaries.

"I also drew on the American Football look, with big shoulder pads to symbolise protection.

"For our model shots, I created the setting of a 1950s abandoned hospital to add to the theme."

Jessica said she had begun working on her designs in September and now hoped to take up a fashion design job in the industry.

She added: "The whole experience has been really enjoyable and exciting. You want everything to be perfect on the day, so there is pressure.

"Studying in Derby has shown me different ways of working and has enabled me to really push myself. It's been fantastic."

Fiona Hawthorne, senior lecturer of fashion studies at the University of Derby, said: "The students have all worked extremely hard.

"It is nice to see such a mix of collections and the processes that they have used. Nicholas explored with cutting and Jessica worked with architectural structures.

"So, in terms of collections, no two were the same, which is very interesting.

"The designers started looking at ideas back in September and what was admirable about this group was that they had a range of different concepts which they brought to the table."

THIS week I witnessed something genuinely inspiring.

I was at an awards ceremony for Derby people being recognised for the tremendous volunteering work they do.

Among the amazing stories being told at Derby Theatre was a tale of how one 27-year-old woman had volunteered for 320 hours of work at a city charity that helps disabled children despite being recently diagnosed with severe autism.

Another told of the service one Alvaston woman had given to Derbyshire Carers, who continues to carry on her work despite the loss of her husband.

But, among the deserving stories I listened in on, it was the pre-ceremony entertainment that almost brought a tear to my eye.

I'd not heard of Derby charity Steps for the Future before but I have now.

A dance troupe of 10 young adults, all of whom were born with Down's Syndrome, leapt on to the stage and, fearless to the last, produced one of the most stunning routines I've seen.

A spectacular mix of cartwheels, break dancing and rolls brought the audience to their feet as everyone clapped along.

Once that routine was over, four of them returned to the stage for another equally boppy choreographed piece.

Then young singer and wheelchair-user Donna Edward sang a faultless cover of the LeAnn Rimes hit "You Light Up My Life".

And, to finish the entertainment, the whole gang were back together for a rousing rendition of the Queen song "We Are The Champions".

What struck me most about Steps for the Future was clearly how much they were enjoying themselves.

The whole place was a sea of smiles from the time they took to the stage to the standing ovation they received at the end of their performance and long after they took their bows.

As someone who has sung on stage on a number of occasions, I am fully aware how nerve-wracking it can be, which made their performance all the more brave in my eyes.

Luckily, before they disappeared, I managed to grab a word with Maggie Attenborrow, who founded the charity six years ago.

"What we provide is performing arts for people with disabilities," she said. "Only we refuse to call them disabilities, they are differences.

"90% of the people who we see were born with Down's Syndrome but we also have members who have cerebral palsy, severe forms of autism and there are some who have conditions I've never even heard of."

Maggie went on to tell me how Steps for the Future had recently performed at Derby Cathedral with the backing of a gospel choir, practiced three times a week and, in her own words, "simply love to perform".

Based on the performances I witnessed this week, the charity has a long and fulfilling future ahead of it with a passionate founder, an army of dedicated volunteers and a troupe of ridiculously talented dancers and singers.

The only thing Steps for the Future want, Maggie told me, is a permanent base to practice their dance, music and drama.

Maybe someone out there can help them? Find out more details at www.steps forthefuture.co.uk.

Runs flow after Derbyshire CCC make a flying start against Leicestershire

DERBYSHIRE made a dream start but also suffered more than their share of frustration on the opening day their LV County Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Following the blow of Tim Groenewald's impending departure from the 3aaa County Ground, Derbyshire needed a real lift and, having lost the toss, they had the home side 11-3 after only 13 balls. A century stand between Josh Cobb and Ned Eckersley held them up as the day developed into one of lots of boundaries and plenty of wild shots which flew just wide or over fielders. At tea, Leicestershire were 235-6. Derbyshire struck with the first ball of the day as Angus Robson drove at Mark Footitt and a thick outside edge flew straight to Marcus North at gully. Tony Palladino was driven for four off his first ball but his next beat Greg Smith's defensive push and the batsman went lbw for four at 6-2. Footitt had his second wicket with the first ball of the third over as it nipped back into right-hander Ramnaresh Sarwan and the West Indian was caught at short leg by Paul Borrington for five. It might have been 17-4 in the fifth but Josh Cobb drove firmly at Footitt and David Wainwright, at mid off, could not hold on to a tough one-handed catch as he hit the floor, diving to his left. Tom Taylor, a 19-year-old right-arm seamer, got through a good six-over spell for 20 runs after coming in for his first-class debut as Groenewald's replacement and though he was still waiting for his first wicket at tea, he had not looked out of place. Cobb brought up his 50 in the second over after lunch but, two balls later, drove Footitt loosely to backward point at 111-4 and Eckersley followed three overs later, lbw to Palladino for 44 at 113-5. Rob Taylor rode his luck to 40 before driving Palladino to extra cover but Niall O'Brien (60) and Ben Raine (22) took Leicestershire through to tea.

A SHOPLIFTER who was shown CCTV footage of himself stealing meat from a supermarket told police "he didn't recognise himself" before saying he had "problems with his blurred eyes".

Michael Halford was caught on camera stealing packs of food on two occasions from a Sainsbury's store in Derby.

Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court heard how the 39-year-old was also on bail at the time after being handed a suspended sentence for possession of a weapon.

John Cooper, prosecuting, said the thefts took place on December 31 last year and February 23 this year.

Mr Cooper said: "He was arrested and interviewed. He firstly said he had a mental health condition and told officers he could not remember what he did on the days the items were stolen.

"The defendant was shown the CCTV, which clearly identified him, but he told officers he did not recognise himself from the image before telling them he had blurred vision."

The hearing was told how Halford, of Boyer Street, Derby, had 23 previous convictions for 50 offences dating back to the 1990s.

They include affray and possessing a baseball bat in a public place, for which he was handed a suspended sentence in March last year.

Halford pleaded guilty to the thefts and for breaching the terms of his suspended sentence.

Tim Smith, for Halford, said his client had stopped using heroin five to six months ago and was being supported by a charity in Derby.

He said: "His pre-sentence report shows how he has had previous issues with drink and drugs.

"He does suffer from all sorts of issues and clearly does not remember committing these offences."

Magistrates handed him a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for six months, and a three-month curfew, confining him to his home between 7pm and 7am.

He was also ordered to pay £72 compensation, the value of the stolen goods, £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.

A RESTAURANT thanked its customers for their loyalty by offering them a free meal. More than 600 diners at The Raj Restaurant, in Allestree, ate for nothing last night and the previous Sunday. Manager Freddy Ahmed said he wanted to thank the local community after they persuaded the building's owners to keep it as an Indian restaurant. The owners, Midlands Co-operative, had planned to convert it into a shop but backed down after more than 4,000 people signed petitions against the move. Mr Ahmed said: "We wanted to say thank-you to the local community. "The restaurant has been chock-a-block. We've done 300 free meals this weekend and 300 last weekend."

DERBYSHIRE just about had the better of a rollercoaster first day to their LV County Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road. They bowled the home side out for 311 after having them 11-3 to start the day. In between came enough boundaries and near misses to fill three innings of cricket. Mark Footitt finished with 6-65 and Tony Palladino 4-62. At the close, Derbyshire began their first innings on a more sedate but sturdy 12-0. Following the blow of Tim Groenewald's impending departure from the 3aaa County Ground, Derbyshire needed a real lift and, having lost the toss, they had the home side 11-3 after only 13 balls. Derbyshire struck with the first ball of the day as Angus Robson drove at Footitt and a thick outside edge flew straight to Marcus North at gully. Cobb and Ned Eckersley put on 100 for the fourth wicket. Cobb brought up his 50 in the second over after lunch but, two balls later, drove Footitt loosely to backward point at 111-4 and Eckersley followed three overs later, lbw to Palladino for 44 at 113-5. Rob Taylor rode his luck to 40 before driving Palladino to extra cover but Niall O'Brien and Ben Raine put on 118 for the seventh wicket before the new ball brought a swift end to the innings. O'Brien uppercut a catch to third man on 89, James Sykes was caught at first slip for nought, Raine holed out to mid on for 55 and finally Alex Wyatt was caught at short leg. That left nine overs for Derbyshire to see out and they did so through Stephen Moore (10) and Paul Borrington (2).

Championship spotlight: Nottingham Forest set to sign two strikers

NOTTINGHAM Forest are expected to announce their first two new signings of the Stuart Pearce era tomorrow. It is understood that both players are strikers, as Pearce looks to bolster his attacking options for the new campaign. The Reds have been working on a deal to bring Lee Peltier back to the City Ground following his successful loan spell at the end of last season, but it is not thought the versatile defender or midfielder is one of the two players the club are close to completing moves for. Norwich City are said to be considering making an offer for Leeds United striker Ross McCormack according to The People. McCormack has been the centre of transfer speculation since the departure of Brian McDermott. Norwich see McCormack as the ideal replacement for Gary Hooper who himself has been linked with a move to QPR. Norwich were believed to have been interested in Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes at the beginning of the week but it is believed the fee wanted is too much for Norwich, so they have now turned their attention to the Leeds hotshot. Norwich have had transfer dealings with Leeds a few times in the last couple of seasons, and if any bid should come about McCormack could join Snodgrass, Howson, Johnson and Becchio at Carrow Road.

Derbyshire County Council: Labour insists it is not 'dithering' over making cuts

LABOUR has hit back at claims it is "dithering" over making cuts at Derbyshire County Council.

The authority must save £157 million by 2018 – due to a reduction in its government grants, inflation and demographic pressures, such as an increasingly ageing population.

To address the problem, Labour plans to axe or reduce Derbyshire's mobile library service, shut children's centres and spend less on maintaining streetlights.

About 1,600 staff are also to be made redundant.

However, the opposition Conservative group said the measures do not go far enough.

And councillor Mike Longden, shadow cabinet member for council services, has alleged Labour is not on target to deliver the savings required for 2014-15.

He said the party was "dithering" and that this "could be a disaster".

But council leader Anne Western said her party was on track. She said: "I think it's a nonsense to say we're dithering. They left us in a very difficult position because of the way they set the budget for the (financial) year just gone.

"They pushed £10 million of cuts into the future because they dithered before they lost the election (in May 2013).

"We've picked it up and dealt with it. We've got a sound plan for the next five years. We're further along than other councils in that respect.

"It doesn't mean it's easy. But we're not dithering. We're trying to avoid making cuts which are going to harm people. I will stand by that.

"There are some cuts we've managed not to make straight away to give people more time. It's better to do it that way, because then it's not coming to an abrupt end.

"That's showing compassion and common sense."

The Tories also criticised Labour following the collapse of an £83 million contract for 685 extra care flats in locations across Derbyshire.

The contract was terminated after non-profit care provider Housing 21 ran out of funds to deliver the scheme.

Councillor Wayne Major, shadow cabinet lead for adult care, said it was a sign that "Labour is in danger of imploding and taking our most vulnerable residents with them".

Again, Labour hit back. Councillor Clare Neill, cabinet member for adult social care, said: "It is disappointing that the Conservatives want to score political points over a contract from which the council's partner has withdrawn, because it couldn't borrow money at a rate that made it viable.

"Rather than play politics, they should tell George Osborne to get the country's economy back on its feet."

Derbyshire father furious after daughter has mouth Sellotaped by teacher

A TEACHER has been criticised for Sellotaping a pupil's mouth because she would not stop talking.

Elise Smith, 11, was punished by being made to sit with Sellotape over her lips for around a quarter of an hour.

Her furious father, Marc Smith, complained to William Allitt School, in Newhall, the local education authority and watchdog Ofsted.

School governors have criticised the teacher's actions as 'misguided', and no further disciplinary action will be taken. It is understood he has since apologised to the pupil and her family.

Mr Smith spoke out about the incident after the school was recently placed into special measures following a damning Ofsted inspection report.

He said: "The teacher apologised but has not been punished enough, in my opinion, because he didn't get suspended and is still working at that school. "I heard about teachers in another school doing it and they were suspended, so why not here? "I would personally not want that teacher working at that school."

Mr Smith, of Brunt Lane, Woodville, found out about the incident when he got home from work and complained to the school the next morning.

He said: "I was fuming. "The children were all talking in class and were told to be quiet, but my daughter kept on talking. "He should just have sent her out.

"You cannot lay a finger on children." "I was fuming."

Mr Smith said he was angry that the teacher is still at the school.

He said: ""I spoke to the county council and they went into the school and asked questions, and I reported it to Ofsted as well. "I originally kept her out of school at the start but she was missing her friends. "I was reluctant to send her back but I had to trust the school."

Jean Mead, chairman of governors at William Allitt School, said: "The welfare of pupils is always our top priority. "This was a misguided action rather than a malicious one. "It happened in December last year. It shouldn't have taken place under any circumstances – the teacher immediately regretted his actions and apologised. "We worked alongside the local authority to carry out a thorough investigation and appropriate action was taken."

DERBYSHIRE lost both openers to start to their first innings on the second day of their LV County Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road. Rain forced the players off half an hour before the scheduled lunch break with Derbyshire 67-2 off 30 overs – a marked contrast to the cavalier approach of Leicestershire the previous day. Wayne Madsen was 27 not out and Marcus North one not out. The first wicket went down in the second over of the day as Paul Borrington edged to second slip, where Greg Smith took the catch off Anthony Ireland for six. Eleven overs later, Stephen Moore paid the price for not getting forward to Ben Raine as a ball skipped through low and got him lbw for 18 at 47-2. That was the last of the wickets for Leicestershire as Derbyshire settled in against a bowling attack intent on bottling them up.
