Derby County target Lukas Jutkiewicz tipped to join Burnley

DERBY County transfer target Lukas Jutkiewicz could be on his way to Burnley.

The Clarets are reported to be leading the chase for the 25-year-old Middlesbrough striker.

Derby asked about Jutkiewicz but felt the asking price of around £1.5m was too high.

Burnley, it seems, have agreed to meet the price tag and have been given permission to speak to the player Jutkiewicz and his representatives.

Bolton Wanderers and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in Jutkiewicz.

The former Coventry City forward scored seven goals in 20 games while on loan at Bolton last season but was made available for transfer when Boro boss Aitor Karanka decided he did not form part of his future plans.

Boro paid £1.3m to sign Jutkiewicz in January 2012.

Derbyshire CCC set big t20 Blast target but Northamptonshire break club record to win

DERBYSHIRE'S big total was not quite big enough as Northamptonshire pulled off their record highest successful t20 chase to beat them last night at Wantage Road.

Tom Knight launched Derbyshire to 191-6 – their sixth-highest score in the competition – to give the Falcons a great chance of only their second NatWest t20 Blast victory of the season.

Knight hammered five sixes in 44 not out off only 18 balls but the Steelbacks produced a late burst of their own to win by four wickets with four balls to spare.

Derbyshire recovered well after the loss of Chesney Hughes in the third over, Marcus North and Gareth Cross putting on 67 for the second wicket in seven overs.

Cross, who's pinch-hitting at number three has been more miss than hit, struck his former Lancashire team-mate Steven Crook for 14, with three fours, to end the power play phase at 54-1 but North went for a run-a-ball 29 in the 10th over when he skied a slog-sweep at James Middlebrook.

Cross moved on to 48 but Crook switched ends and returned to the attack with two key wickets – having Cross caught at short cover and Wayne Madsen at third man for 10 in four balls.

That was 101-4 in the 13th over and Cross' runs came off 33 balls with five fours and a six but Derbyshire were stalling in the middle period of their innings again when Crook had Alex Hughes lbw for two at 118-5 in the 15th over.

They badly needed a late lift and got it from an unlikely combination.

Billy Godleman had scored only eight runs in his previous three t20 appearances for Derbyshire and Knight had only scored 14 runs in four innings but together they put on 47 in 24 balls for the sixth wicket.

Godleman moved on to 39 off 24 balls with five fours and a six before he was bowled by a full-length Olly Stone ball in the 19th over but Knight saw it through in spectacular fashion.

He swept Graeme White for two successive sixes in the 17th over but saved his best for last, launching David Willey over square leg, long off and long on in the final over.

By adding 73 off the last 31 balls, the Falcons had a very good total to defend.

Richard Levy threatened to make short work of it, though. The big South African, scorer of three t20 centuries, threatened a fourth as he moved to 69 off 37 balls with seven fours and four sixes but he tried to hit David Wainwright over deep midwicket and was caught by Godleman.

He and Willey had put on 96 in 10.3 overs and the Falcons badly needed to take some of that steam out of the Steelbacks' charge.

Though Kyle Coetzer attempted to pick that momentum straight back up, he was bowled for 13 in a Wainwright over that cost him only one run as well as bringing that wicket and Northants went into the last seven overs needing 75.

Croft was caught at long off in the next to make it 119-3 and Wainwright took a third wicket when, the ball after Willey hit him for six, he had the opener caught at deep midwicket for 40 as Northants went into the last five overs needing 57.

Adam Rossington (34) and Ben Duckett (14) cut a huge slice out of that but when Greg Cork dismissed both in three balls of the 19th over, 14 more were needed off the last eight balls.

Derbyshire sensed they could snatch it back then but White smashed the first two balls he faced for sixes and that was that.

Derby County new boy Cyrus Christie's praise for Rams skipper Richard Keogh

DERBY County's new signing Cyrus Christie says Rams skipper Richard Keogh played a key role in his development.

Christie's first season as a professional saw him play alongside Keogh in Coventry's defence.

"He used to talk me through the games. He helped me a lot and gave me good advice," said Christie, who has teamed up with Keogh again after joining Derby from the Sky Blues.

The 21-year-old right-back has signed a three-year deal after the clubs agreed an undisclosed compensation package.

Looking back at the 2011-12 season, Christie said: "Richard played every game and I played 40 games, I think, so we played alongside each other quite a bit.

"He is a fantastic player and a good leader.

"It was a shame how that season went [Coventry were relegated conceding 65 goals in 46 matches] but we were quite solid at the back."

Christie said before signing for Derby he received positive reports about the club from former Rams favourite Lee Carsley.

Carsley worked with Christie at Coventry in his roles as first-team coach and caretaker manager.

"I spoke to Lee about Derby. He rang me a few times and told me about the place and the club. Everything I heard about Derby has been positive," said Christie.

"Derby had a great season last season.

"They have a talented team and a great manager and set-up.

"It was the best choice out of the clubs that have shown interest in me and it is a club that is going places."

Stepping back up to the Championship also appealed to Christie.

"I played in the Championship when I was 18 and 19, so it was about playing at the higher level again," he said.

Christie will battle with Kieron Freeman for the right-back role.

"The position is there for the taking," said Christie.

"Obviously there are other players here who are fighting for the slot.

"There is Kieron Freeman. I played against him last season and he is a good player, so it is competition for places.

"I will train hard and put in the work, and hopefully I can have that spot for the first game of the season."

Coventry is Christie's home-town club and although it is emotional for him to leave, he believes it is the right time.

"I told them last year I wanted to step back up to the Championship and to be fair to them they said I could only go if the right offer came in," he said. "Unfortunately, the right offer didn't come in.

"I told them I would play last season and give 100 per cent but I wasn't going to change my mind.

"It was emotional to leave. I was there for 13 years and I made some friends for life.

"The staff were great with me and I learned a lot there.

"Hopefully I can learn a lot under the gaffer here at Derby and his coaching staff."

Secret Service: Our spy's verdict on the Plough Inn, Brackenfield

Your spy visits The Plough Inn at Brackenfield in the north of the county

Secret Service and companion headed into the Peak District recently to make the most of the warm weather. While looking for a good stop-off point for lunch, we came across an attractive-looking stone pub called The Plough Inn.

Situated at Brackenfield, just off the A38 (on the Alfreton to Matlock Road) The Plough Inn enjoys panoramic views over the rolling Derbyshire hills.

With two tables on the patio area to the front, we were quite tempted to dine al fresco to take in the landscape, while The Plough Inn also has a large grassy beer garden at the rear.

We decided to eat indoors and, on inquiring into the history of the inn, your spy discovered that it is a 16th-century listed building and was originally a farm.

On the Saturday lunchtime we visited, the inn was relatively quiet but it had a lovely relaxed atmosphere and a promising menu, which looked a cut above the average pub grub fare. The prices also reflected this assumption with many dishes on a par with restaurant prices.

The Plough Inn's interior reflected the venue's original purpose, featuring a series of characterful rooms on three different levels. The top end is The Orchard Room Restaurant, while the lower levels offer lots of snug-style seating areas, also available for less formal dining.

Your spy chose roast rump of lamb, while my companion opted for a steak and ale pie. Both dishes were great. The good-sized portion of sliced lamb was slightly rare and incredibly tender while the vegetables had just the right level of firmness. This is definitely a chef who knows what they're doing.

My companion reported that their pie was also superb, with delicious pastry and a tender tasty filling of prime pieces of beef and gravy, served with plenty of vegetables. The mains really were faultless.

For dessert, we chose a rhubarb Eton mess and a sticky toffee pudding.

The Eton mess was a nice twist on a tried and tested theme, though the generous portion became a little too rich towards the end, while my companion described their dessert as the best sticky toffee pudding they had ever tasted, complemented by delicious homemade ice cream.

The whole experience was very satisfying. Good service, an excellent choice of wines and real ales, very pleasant surroundings and traditional British pub food at its best. What more could you ask?

Roast rump of lamb, £15, Steak and ale pie, £11, Rhubarb Eton mess, £5.50, Sticky toffee pudding with Homemade ice cream, £5.50. Two glasses of iced tap water, no charge. Total £37.

voting in this year's Baby and Toddler of the Year will begin next week with a bumper 20-page supplement in Monday's edition of the Derby Telegraph.

The special photographic supplement will feature nearly 900 children aged up to five years – more than ever before and compared to 700 last year.

Readers are invited to vote for their favourite children in the four categories – up to nine months; ten to 18 months; 19 months to 35 months; and three to five years – using the in-paper coupons. The first will be in Monday's supplement.

It couldn't be easier to vote, simply cut out the voting coupons, fill in the child's name and unique identification number, then send in the coupons.

In each batch of voting coupons, which appear every day, a voting registration form is required.

Voting registration forms will appear every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the voting period until Saturday, August 16. Then the number of children will be reduced to 80 finalists.

A total of £3,000 is up for grabs in this year's competition, with each category winner taking home £500 and the overall winner claiming the coveted trophy, as either Baby or Toddler of the Year, and an additional £1,000.

Four-year-old Kelsie Smith was the overall winner of the Telegraph's competition last year. Her mum, Elaine Smallwood, of Wilmington Avenue, Alvaston, said the money would be invested into Kelsie's future, for university or college fees.

Jim Boam, Derby Telegraph promotions coordinator, said, "It's always nice to see the smiling faces of our entrants. This year is no exception, with so many wonderful children beaming from our pages.

"We're really pleased with the response to this year's competition."

Tributes paid to young South Derbyshire cricketer Charlie Veale who died suddenly

TRIBUTES have been made following the "sad and devastating" death of a 21-year-old South Derbyshire cricketer. Charlie Veale, who played for Lullington Park Cricket Club, died yesterday. He is believed to have died after suffering a stroke. His death is the third tragedy to hit the club in less than a year. In April, Keith Poynton, father of Derbyshire wicketkeeper Tom, was killed in a car crash near Drakelow, while the fiancée of one of the club's players died just before Christmas. Dave Fern, chairman of Lullington Park, said: "This is an absolute tragedy. He was with the club from Kwik Cricket through to some first team games. He could do anything. "He was a gentle, nice, and good guy. There has been a massive outpouring of grief at the club and through local cricket which underlines how popular and loved he was. "Grown men have been in tears, which is not something you see often." Mr Fern said all of the clubs matches this weekend will be postponed. He said: "The league has given us emergency postponement. Some lads will meet up today and have a pint and a catch up to remember him. "I will remember Charlie as he was. A larger than life character and the Charlie we all knew and loved. "It is quite devastating." Mr Fern said the club has been through a lot. He said: "They say these things come in threes and this is a year we will be glad to see the back of. "Our first thoughts now have to be with his family and to look after them."

Derby City Council leader Ranjit Banwait looks for 'radical plan' to sort out congestion

$

NEARLY a million pounds given to Derby City Council by the Government to help tackle congestion has been criticised as a "drop in the ocean" by the authority's leader.

Councillor Ranjit Banwait said that "beggars can't be choosers" but that more radical thinking and investment is needed to properly deal with the issue.

The Department for Transport has granted the council £961,000 to help it continue its Connected scheme, aimed at promoting sustainable transport and cutting congestion.

It is intended to help fund the £8,968,000 cost of the scheme for the 2015-16 financial year.

The Government said it was giving £440 million to local authorities to fund sustainable transport schemes. It had previously provided £4.9 million for the running of the Connected project since September 2012.

Since then, the scheme has helped with the creation of the new city centre cycle hub, Park Bikeworks, and engaging with businesses to work out ways of getting staff to work in a sustainable way.

A total of £89,000 in grants has been given to nine local businesses to help with this, with the firms spending another £128,000 on the projects. The latest cash will pay for more of the same.

Mr Banwait said: "What we will be able to do with the cash is nothing radical. It's what we've been doing before. We've got a lot of people coming from outside the city to work in Derby, which is great for the economy, but is clogging up the roads.

"We need a radical plan for Derby and that means better and more park and rides.

"And if we are going to get people to take the bus from Long Eaton to Derby their route has got to be separated so they are not competing with everyone else. There's got to be an incentive."

Mr Banwait said the Government should see spending on projects like this as a "good investment".

The rest of the cash for Connected in 2015-16 will come from other sources, including developers.

Baroness Kramer, the Minister of State for Transport, said of the grants: "We want more people to choose to travel in a way that cuts congestion and carbon, delivering economic and environmental benefits.

"This funding will make that choice easier for millions of people across the country, delivering new sustainable transport schemes throughout England."
