DERBYSHIRE will go into the final day at Grace Road with victory in their sights following David Wainwright's excellent all-round display on the third day of their LV County Championship match against Leicestershire.
Wainwright completed his first century for the county and then tore through the Leicestershire top order with the ball on his way to 5-54, making him the first Derbyshire player since Jon Clare in 2008 to score a century and take a five-for in the same match.
The home side were 200-9 at the close, leaving them ahead by 175.
Derbyshire finished on 336 in their first innings, with Wainwright having made 109 and Tom Taylor, on his first-class debut, 40. They added 87 together, which is only two runs short of the record for the ninth wicket for Derbyshire against Leicestershire.
The last four wickets put on 221 and that left Derbyshire ahead by 25.
Wainwright started the day on 83 and got going again with a smart cover drive for four. Taylor also settled nicely and, with nine needed in the 110th over to take another bonus point, Wainwright sealed it with a straight boundary with one ball to spare.
His hundred came up three overs later with a swept four off James Sykes. The century took him 188 balls, included 12 fours and was the third of his career.
His innings ended when Wainwright was caught at gully and Taylor was the last man out at the end of a very impressive first knock, sweeping to midwicket. Mark Footitt was 10 not out.
Wainwright's memorable day continued with his second ball in Leicestershire's eighth over as Greg Smith was bowled for 16 at 33-1 and he followed up in his next over by bowling Ned Eckersley for nought.
In the second over after lunch, Angus Robson was stumped by Gareth Cross off Wainwright for 13 before Josh Cobb drove the spinner to extra cover for 16.
Ramnaresh Sarwan edged Footitt to first slip Wayne Madsen and fell for 18 at 74-5, then Wainwright had his fifth when Rob Taylor edged to slip Madsen for 19 at 113-6.
Niall O'Brien and Ben Raine stemmed the flow of wickets until Raine was caught at short leg off Scott Elstone for 19.
O'Brien scored 89 in the first innings and kept his side alive in the second until he was bowled by Elstone for 71 at 184-8.
Footitt had Sykes lbw but Anthony Ireland (3) and Alex Wyatt (11), who had to bat with a runner because of an ankle injury, saw out the remaining overs.
