CENTURIES for Wes Durston and Wayne Madsen set Derbyshire on their way to a 136-run victory in their opening match in the Royal London One-Day Cup at the 3aaa County Ground.
Durston scored 134 and Madsen 138 in a total of 340-5 after Hampshire had won the toss and put them in to bat first. It was their highest score in one-day cricket against first-class county opposition.
The partnership put on 222, which is a county record for the third wicket in List A cricket.
Hampshire made a bright start to their reply and were well placed at 164-4 in the 25th over but spinners Durston and David Wainwright sparked a collapse as the last six wickets fell for 40 runs in 9.3 overs.
The victory took Derbyshire back to zero points in the group because they were docked two points for a poor wicket in a 40-over match against Durham last season.
Durston and Madsen came together for the start of the fourth over, with the Falcons already in a spot of bother at 20-2. Billy Godleman hit five before sending a leading edge to point off Chris Wood and Scott Elstone was bowled for nought by Matt Coles.
Durston was first to his century, his first in List A cricket for the county, in the 34th over, off 106 balls with eight fours and a six.
When he was out at 242-3 in the 40th over, lbw sweeping at Will Smith, he had faced 129 balls, scoring 14 fours and a six.
Madsen reached three figures with a top-edged pull for his 12th four, having faced 107 balls. The captain was finally caught at cover off a top-edged slog sweep at Coles, having hit 16 fours and a six and faced 127 balls.
Gareth Cross added 11 before he was bowled by Coles in the final over, leaving Shivnarine Chanderpaul (29 not out) and Alex Hughes (five not out) the unbeaten batsmen.
Hampshire started aggressively and were 101-1 at the end of their first 10-over power play, with James Vince caught at cover off Tom Taylor for 30. They took their second power play straight away but it did not work their way.
Australian Glenn Maxwell was dropped on 34 but went for 35 in the same over, the 11th, and Jimmy Adams was caught at fine leg for nought at 108-3 in the 13th.
Michael Carberry reached his 50 in the 18th over but swept Wainwright to deep backward square leg for 55 in the 21st over and that was the beginning of the end for Hampshire.
Once Smith was caught at cover for 35 off Wainwright, the pressure piled up and Hampshire wilted under it until they were all out for 204 in the 35th over.
Wainwright finished with 4-34 and man-of-the-match Durston 2-47.
