POLICE in Derbyshire have launched a campaign to tackle vehicle crime in the county.

Running throughout August, it will look to educate the public on how to secure their vehicles and prevent becoming a victim of crime.

Detectives say thefts from cars usually peak in the summer months as people leave windows open and their vehicles insecure.

Detective Chief Inspector Hayley Barnett, who is leading the campaign, said: "Most car crime is opportunistic and therefore preventable, there are a number of ways that you can reduce the chances of your vehicle being a target.

"Remember to lock all windows and doors when leaving your vehicle unattended, even if it is just for a short time. Ensure that all valuables are removed from your vehicle and not left on display.

"If a Sat Nav is used remember to remove it along with its cradle and wipe away any 'sucker marks'.

"Use a steering wheel lock, immobiliser, alarm or tracking device."
