A PLANE with a possible explosive device on board, which was scheduled to land at Manchester Airport, had to be escorted by military jets as it circled over Derbyshire.

The Qatar Airways plane was escorted by the Royal Air Force following information received by the pilot.

Greater Manchester Police said they were treating the incident as a "full emergency" as they did not know "how genuine this threat was".

The force said it had arrested one man on board on suspicion of making a "hoax bomb threat".

While the flight was being escorted, it is understood to have travelled over Derby before circling Ashbourne and heading over Buxton and Glossop.

The flight path of QR23 was tracked live on the website www.planefinder.net/flight/QR23 by a concerned Ashbourne resident, who captured the screenshot showing its path over the town.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "An incoming plane has been escorted into the airport by the Royal Air Force as a result of information received by the pilot about a possible device on board.

"We don't know how genuine this threat is but it is absolutely vital we deal with the situation as a full emergency.

"As a result people will see the police and other agencies at the airport and on the airfield.

"At this time I would urge them not to be alarmed. Our response will be as comprehensive as it is proportionate with the safety of those on board and in and around the airport our paramount concern."
