MORE than 2,000 potential students bombarded the phone lines at the University of Derby today looking to secure places through the clearing process. By the end of the afternoon - with phone lines due to close at 8pm - they had dealt with 2,300 calls, compared to 1,824 for all of the same day in 2013. In some cases, this was because the students' grades were worse than expected but, for others, it was because they were better. A University of Derby spokesman said: "Applications to the University of Derby are up by 12% compared to last year. "Owing to our popularity, we've been able to push our recruitment capabilities to the limits, so we can take up to 4,000 students this year - including 500 through clearing at the start of Thursday morning. "There are openings across a broad range of courses and we'd encourage people to visit our website or phone us on Derby 592014 for the latest information."
