A SCHOOLGIRL caused an alert when she climbed onto the flat roof of a former library in Heanor and began to hurl items at passing traffic on Tuesday night.

She remained there for 90 minutes until she was persuaded to get off the building on Ilkeston Road, at about 9.15pm. The girl, who is believed to be 10, was unharmed.

Police diverted traffic around a 100-yard stretch of road while two ambulance crews stood by and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service sent a high rise ladder.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: "We had to close the road as a precaution after a child managed to get onto the roof of the old library."

The building is currently closed but a replacement is due to be built.
