Mosquitoes warning: Are deadly and disease-ridden mosquitos heading for UK?

THE threat of deadly mosquitos heading to Britain has prompted health officials to closely monitor UK borders, national reports say.

It has been reported how the disease-carrying insects have already been spotted in Europe and experts fear they will cross the Channel.

One mosquito already seen in Kent is known to spread the infectious West Nile virus - which causes serious flu-like symptoms and can lead to swelling of the brain and spinal cord.

The reports say continuing mild weather and global warming could help the creatures thrive across southern England.

This video below was produced to show how work done by the University of Liverpool illustrates how change in climate might make Europe and the UK more suitable for the Asian Tiger mosquito to thrive.

Dr Jolyon Medlock, from Public Health England's medical entomology team, said: "One of the things we are looking at is the incursion of invasive mosquitoes which act as vectors for diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya.

"The number of cases is fairly low in Europe at the moment but with climate change and increased globalisation there is the potential for that to change."
