Derby schools to have same holiday dates as those in Derbyshire

DERBY city schools are set to follow a policy of having the same holiday dates as those in Derbyshire until the end of the 2019-20 academic year. The city council's cabinet made the decision to agree the dates for the five years from 2015-16 at a meeting tonight. Councillor Martin Rawson, cabinet member for children and young people, said the aim of the system was "to secure reasonable consistency for families who have children in schools under different authorities". But the plan is not absolutely guaranteed as, from September 2015, schools across the country will be able to set their own term dates as long as they comply with the law. Asked after the meeting if this put the decision for the five academic years under threat, Labour council leader Paul Bayliss said: "Hopefully we will be able to maintain a consensus going forward." He said that if a school decided not to follow the plan, parents would probably impress on them why they should. Mr Bayliss said the alternative of schools having a "free for all" when it came to setting term dates would be "chaos".
