A VAN driver died after his vehicle hit a barrier on the A38.
Police say it is thought the man fell ill at the wheel, causing him to lose control of the Transit, which then crashed into the central reservation.
Diversions were in place for 90 minutes as rush-hour traffic faced delays of up to 30 minutes.
The accident was reported at 7.55am yesterday and happened between the M1 at junction 28 at South Normanton and the Watchorn roundabout at Alfreton.
The southbound carriageway was closed until 10.10am while emergency services dealt with the incident.
A police spokesman said: "A man died after the van he was driving left the A38 and struck a barrier on the southbound carriageway.
"At this stage we suspect he may have fallen ill at the wheel.
"He was declared dead at the scene and no other vehicles were involved.
