POLICE have arrested a man suspected of shoplifting from Asda Spondon who dived into the River Derwent to escape their clutches.
After a long chase, he was cornered by officers on Severn Trent land, off Megaloughton Lane, at about 4.40pm, on Sunday.
A police spokesman said the man had, earlier this afternoon, failed to stop for a police officer and made his getaway in a car.
He left the vehicle in Raynesway Park Drive and started running.
The man then dived into the river and climbed out onto the Severn Trent land.
He was then cornered by officers.
The spokesman said the man had "ripped his top off climbing over a fence".
